And I have to share my little souvenir (don't forget, the tower played a big part in the movie "Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind")

Thanks Shad, I appreciate your comment about my son's paintings! Now about the other comment...well, we need to talk :lau

Hi Bruce, nice to see you too! Here's a plaque from Devils Tower about the formation:

I picked up a book about it and there was a note that in about another 50 million years, it could be eroded away. Guess it's a good thing I saw it when I did!

Congrats on that 1st egg Kelsey! You had some good pictures to share today too :D

Thanks!! I was wondering when she was gonna start as her comb has been red for a while lol

And thank you!! I appreciate that!! The geese were very friendly and easy to photograph today. :D

Love the socks!

Also.... is 22 weeks late for a Leghorn or is that normal? I know the first batch of girls didn’t start until at least 22 weeks and they weren’t all laying until like 24 or 26 weeks so she’s about the same as the others but I just always thought Leghorns started much earlier like 16 or 18 being such good layers lol they turn 22 weeks old tomorrow. Not that I care much. Just wondering.

I don't know specifically about leghorns but in my somewhat limited experience, the range can be vast even within a breed. For instance in 2015 I got 3 EEs, they laid at 23, 26 and almost 31 weeks.

That is very interesting! yes I AM glad you got to see it, just in the nick of time :gig

x2 about the range within breed. From what I've seen with the birds I've raised, it can vary.

"Nick of time" Better get out there and see it while you can Bruce!

Huh, very interesting about the range!!

I guess she’s a slacker within her breed then. ;) :lau

She might be slow, but she did it! And will probably give you lots more eggs for quite a while.

I've heard from a lot of folks here on BYC that EE are slow to start laying. The one (and only) EE I had laid at 16 weeks. So just goes to show...they do it when they're good and ready.

That’s true!! I’m actually glad she started slower. Probably healthier for her. And maybe the decreasing daylight hours are doing it?

And yeah, I’ve heard similar or that they’re bad layers. Mine was the first to lay at 22 weeks (though an Orpington also started later that same day), has always been an excellent winter layer, and lays large eggs. I’ve heard they lay medium or smaller ones. Hers are definitely smaller than the other chickens’ eggs but according to the scale are large. And my other EE lays HUGE blue eggs when she lays. For a while they were double yolkers. And consistently jumbo. But after the first like year or year and a half she slowed down a lot and didn’t lay for like almost a year until February this year. And keeps starting her molts in August this year and last year. So she’s not the best layer haha but she lays massive eggs and lays daily when she lays. So my EEs prove everybody wrong lol

They even outlay my Australorps which are pretty terrible layers :lau

And my Orpingtons are great layers too.

So my birds apparently haven’t heard their supposed traits. :lau

Good morning everyone. I bet it will be another hot Sunny day here. Yesterday when I got up at 6 the ground was damp. It was shocking. I think we had precipitation 3 times all summer. Way too dry.
And we are still way to wet!
We are getting rain! Love it! Feels like fall. Tried to get the colors on our mountain, but too cloudy. Still.. pretty. View attachment 1921048 View attachment 1921049. Yesterday....
What a view
Time for some pictures!

Here are a few shots of Devils Tower and the view of the valley from where we trail walked. The tower is 867 feet from base to top and 1,267 feet above the Belle Fourche River.

One of my favorite critters to see, Black Tailed Prairie Dogs. There's a huge colony of them on the road going up to the Tower and another colony of them at the Reptile Gardens.

These are from Sundance, WY (Harry Longabaugh took his name from this town, you might recall a movie called Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid). Had to include the world famous Jackalope photo.

Awesome pictures Debby!
Thank you Kathy! My son is great at taking pictures and has wonderful equipment. He also scanned some of his paintings for me (he does watercolors, animals mainly). He's excited to use some the photos for future paintings.

Here are a few of his watercolors:
