The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

I saw one back in February here, obviously a scout....it was 28°F the morning I saw it! :th
Hummers are all over the place around there Staking out the bird of paradise and the Lantana.
Just saw part of a documenary on humming birds. Very interesting stuff. I had no idea but they eat little tiny bugs when they can catch them on the fly... And they have to eat ever fifteen minutes.

So how do they sleep? They go into a form of hibernation called bromate. Their heards slows to forty eight beats per minute. And cannot move even if they wanted to escape a predator. they have to warm up in the sun and gradually wake up before they can go about their day.

We are on their migratory path to "Other Parts". So we get to see some unusual ones.

They are actually one bird that eat alot of mosquitoes, gnats, and other small beetles and flies. They expend so much energy that's the reason for feeding every 15 minutes....got to stop at a "filling station" and top off, so they can continue on their journey.

Very interesting!

That sleeping state is also called “torpor”. I never heard the “bromate” term before. Here I have 4 breeds of hummers, I am crazy about them. If a plant doesn’t attract and feed them, I won’t plant it in my yard. My yard is actually certified by the a National Wildlife Federation as a National Wildlife Habitat, primarily because of the hummingbirds I have. :love

You are so lucky with those gorgeous hummingbirds. Did you guys see that tiny bird-like dinosaur skull that was recently discovered? Amazing. https://www.ecowatch.com/smallest-dinosaur-found-in-amber-2645470210.html?rebelltitem=1#rebelltitem1

We've had to separate off our two smallest heifers as they kept trying to suckle on the others. It sounds like it's a bad habit some calves get into and if they don't stop then our best option is to put them in the freezer. One of them I'd be quite sad about that as it's a real cutie. Having them separate also means they get a fair share of the hard feed we've been giving them. The big girls just bulldoze them out of the way and hoover up more than they should.

Here are photos of my 3 favourites:
Maisy who now licks me like a lollipop (cow tongues are rough!). She's an adorable cow.

Then there's Merry who has such a soft silver coat. She's a sweetheart as well.

Then there is Big Red who is still a little skittery, but we can now scratch her butt and she doesn't mind too much. I love her hairy ears and her colour.

And here's one of our quail that I'm not sure what to make of. It looks like it's a boy, but it has a black smudge on its chest. Very odd. They are at the ugly bug stage.

Keep staying healthy everybody. We've had our 8th case here but all of the cases so far have been people coming from overseas and falling ill with it. So far there has been no community transfer, but I'm not holding my breath. One of the recent cases was from a guy from Australia who underwent testing in Australia, but before he got the results back he decided to travel over here. And now he's in isolation here sick with Covid-19! Who does that!? As of midnight tonight everyone who arrives in NZ will have to self isolate for 14 days. Not quite sure how that's going to work, but every little effort helps.

anyone know what this is, its on a tree in the panhandle of floridaView attachment 2051765

Maybe a local plant nursery would know? Hopefully they won't ask questions about you picking a bit.

I bought some red blooming strawberry plants yesterday!

I had some pink flowing ones ages ago and the fruits were delicious. I'd love a photo of your red flowing ones once they are blooming.
