The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

It's a breed developed in the South Island by a lady who had a particular mutt chicken who laid all year round, and the hens are supposed to do the same (I think broody in summer, laying in winter, but we'll see how that pans out). All of her birds are descendants of that one hen. They do have Cochin in them (which are themselves a breed re-created in NZ because we never had the 'original' Cochin breed) and I'm sure there would be production birds in them too. I'm hoping one will end up a hen and the other a rooster. The roosters are supposed to be very calm and quiet, not that quiet matters for us as our coop is quite a trek away at the back of the property, away from the road.

I just had to go out in the pouring rain to let our poor chickens out, not that I think they'll stray far from the coop today (not that they ever stray far as much as I'd like them to be doing all the things that chickens are supposed to do)! They are under a thick stand of trees so they are very sheltered.

We are in the process of turning one of the kids sheds into the duck house but it's not quite ready yet so the poor ducks may have to play in the rain for awhile so I can clean out their inside cage. :sick
It sounds like it might be a fun breed to have!

Wait ... isn't it mid winter there??

Yes it is, though inside the house it doesn't get colder than 60F. She's like her father - doesn't feel the cold.

Last winter our son would make me laugh as he'd go outside in a short-sleeved tshirt, declare it was freezing, so he'd swap his tshirt for a long-sleeved tshirt (same thickness material) and he'd go off and play quite happily. That was in the awful wind at Waipu too. I sure don't miss that wind!

Then there's me, walking around with 3 layers on, and still cold.

Good morning folks :frow

Awesome news! I bet Sue will feel better knowing she'll get to go home soon.

How did your hatch go?
:frow Good evening Jae, hope you've had a great day and get the pair you're looking for. I mis-spoke when I used the term "Home". Sue's going to need to move from the hospital to a rehab facility and spend between 4 days to 4 weeks there. She can stand on her own, but hasn't quite made the connection between brain and feet, so it's something she's going to have to re-learn.

I don't know yet on the hatch. Bator is chirping, I'll know more when I bring them out this afternoon.
Good morning all.
:frow Good morning DMC, have a great day
Good morning!

Jae, that was interesting about your chicks...hope you end up with a boy/girl pair!

DMC, was the day care a bit quieter yesterday with Jaws gone?
:frow Good morning Debby, have a great day

Good morning Bob!

4 days to 4 weeks is quite the range...hope Sue's stay at the rehab facility will be on the shorter side :hugs
Thanks. In brighter news, they removed the feed tube yesterday and are clamping off the drain today to see how she does. All expectations are that they'll remove that tomorrow. Once that's done, she can take a shower. Her numbers have been and remain fantastic. She's really looking forward to washing her hair. She get's a daily visit from the sound a gram folks, taking pics of her head so her hair is loaded with the gel that they use.

I bet that's going to be the best shower ever for her!
