The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

Hi everyone!

Those wild fires are terrible. I sure hope something changes soon to improve the situation.

DH and I might be trying our hand at butchering some ducks. The male we kept, and one of the girls, have been making our son's life a misery, so they are all shut up in a pen again (which defeats the purpose of having them as bug control). We've tried holding them down to establish dominance and it works at the time but the next time they see him they have another go. They'll try and have the odd go at me too but I know the warning signs (they drop their wings) and I chase them off whenever I go in their pen to remind them I won't put up with their rubbish. We've found some friends for the girl who is nice, but the people we are buying them from just have to catch them.

The resident turkey flock is up the back near the chickens. There are two toms and they are showing off with all their might. They look so cute and funny.

It's almost day 18 for my eggs. I'm interested to see what hatches out. With the Partridge coloured chicks there is another boy. :woot I'm not sure about the light ones yet but hopefully in a few more days their chest feathers will have filled in enough. They are feathering up super fast compared to the Birchens.
Finally our air quality is down to 155. If it gets below 150, my DW can go swimming at the city pool!

I have processed Chicken, squirrel, rabbit, Quail Doves and pheasant. There is not much difference except for size.

Duck is very tasty too!

@ronott1 are you still making the Piima? I ordered a new culture today, I’m so happy I can get just that one now instead of the 4 different types.
Yes! I cultured a 4 cup mason jar of Piima today. Tomorrow I will culture a jar of Bulgarian yogurt.

Yum!

Well today was the mother of all Mondays. Or at least the mother'est Monday I've had in a while :barnie
For me Monday was busy and weird working from home. I am doing a lot of the beginning of the Fall Quarter for the University from home!

Plastic "single use" bags were supposed to be outlawed in VT earlier this year but Covid got in the way. Not allowed to use your reusable bags (which I've been doing for nearly 40 years) so I had them put the groceries back in the cart and bagged them at the car. Plastic bag ban now in effect and we can use our reusable bags though some store you bag your own, some they will dain to touch them. If you need a paper bag the store can give you one, or sell you one. Oddly if they sell you one they HAVE to charge at least $0.10. No idea why, I'm sure some stores would be happy to sell them at cost.

Apparently our skies are going to be tinted by "your" fires as well but high enough it won't affect air quality.

Oh my, I didn't realize the smoke was so far up into Canada as well.

Wow, looks like most everyone (thing?) in 3 states will go!

That is too close to my cousin, she's only 55 miles south of Shasta.
I read today that the smoke is all the way to New York so I would expect it to be in Vermont too.

55 miles is likely ok from Mt. Shasta. The biggest problem is mud and rocks going down the Mt. apparently. Rocks can be blasted fairly far too. It depends on which way it blows. This type of volcano does not have lava-- just esplosive hot gas and water
