Don't get a side by side unless you can get a big one...they aren't very roomy.

x2 The one I had in our FL house was a side by side and I hated it. The fridge was too narrow and so was the freezer. When it does come time to buy a refrigerator I want one with the freezer down below the fridge.

My 26 year old side by side GE is still working, just leaking from the water valve to the ice maker/water dispenser. So have the water supply cut off and using bought ice.

But being 26 years old, can't help but think something else will be wearing out soon?

With the Labor Day sales, went and looked at new ones - really want one of those french door babies - but researching scares me to buy a new fridge until my old one really dies. There are horror stories about all brands out there. And past reputations no longer mean anything.

That's an easy enough fix. Run a new line with new hardware. The guys at the hardware store will tell you how to do it and make sure you get everything you need. Take pictures of your old water valve. The new refrigerators nowhere like the old ones, they were built to last.

Those were the days...

This is mine and as Debby said its just to narrow.

Here's mine - I never had but a few problems with the door widths - but have another regular fridge for big items in my garage :) It is pulled out from the wall and there has been some minor damage to the floor making it difficult to push all the way back into the slot - so have left it there until we decide to fix or replace it.

In the uk, those types I think they call "American type" thingys - french door stuff i dunno
We call these "side by side" , the French doors have 2 doors that open into one really big space on top and pull out drawer or drawers in the bottom for freezer and other great stuff :)

We had a plumber put in a new water line and cut off valve last week thinking it was the problem. But once connected to the fridge the leak was obviously inside :(
