The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

Nope, I'm in Wisconsin, this is still nice weather, now January and February, that can get brutal, I can't wait for those -20 to -30 days with wind chill warnings of -40 to -50, Now that's cold weather, when your face freezes solid and everything gets chipped out of the ice, then my chickens look a little bit cold.
I hear you we get cold like that here in the U.P. But we are practically cheese heads here too.

Last shopping day before we pack up the car and head for Sioux Falls on Tuesday. Got the last of what we needed so now it's just last of the laundry and packing the suitcases. The chicken box is in the van already with about 8 inches of pine shavings in the bottom and I've picked out the 6 pullets that are going back to live with my brother and sister on her farm - 2 EE, 2 Buff Brahmas and 2 Light Brahmas. That brings me down to having 22 chickens, and 10 of those are scheduled for the freezer first nice day we have when we get back, so that I'm only overwintering 12.....much more managable. And so help me if I fall for that "you need spring chicks to replace the older girls when they slow down laying in the fall." argument again. No, no, NO! As much as I wanted Buff Brahmas, if I'd have followed my original plan I'd be getting them next spring, not this year. <sigh> But Ken was "helping" me. Yep, I get as excited as the next guy about new chicks...I'd be lying to day otherwise. But as I've moved along in this new-to-me chicken world, the one lesson I hope I'm learning best is what my own limitations are. All of that said, IF by next spring Kendra learns to say "chicks" instead of just "rooster", "chicken", and "eggs", and IF she's with us again when we go up to the feed store to pick up chicken food, and IF she she sees the aquariums full of chicks and gets excited, all bets are off! I'm such a sucker.

We also got the coop and run ready for Katie so it's easier for her to take over chicken chores next week. Got fresh leaves down on the floor, nesting boxes emptied and refilled, the extra feeder hung so there's two in there going at all times, and the water bucket lowered for her. We've found that if we put both the old metal holds-a-lot feeder in there along with the gutter one we made, she doesn't have to feed everyday. Summer it's not a big deal. This time of year when she gets home from school it's almost dark already, So we figured if we fill both Tuesday before we leave at 5am, then all she'll have to do when she comes over is get eggs, check and top off the feeders if needed, and use her bucket to fill the waterer. With the waterer lowered onto the cinder blocks while we're gone, it's easier for her to get the top off. So I guess we're set.

I was laughing at the posts about living in the south. Been there, sweated in the t-shirts! Tennessee was hot. Mississippi was unbearable! In 26 years of living from one end of this great country to the other, Mississippi was the only place where I stopped at a traffic light, laid my head on the steering wheel and cried because it was so hot. Without meaning any offense to my friends from the south, the only good thing I can say about the Gulf Coast was that the same roads that led south and in also led north and out.

Thank you everyone, it felt good to share a bit about her. She was special in a lot of ways to a lot of people.

Lady Di, I'm very impressed. What an honor for Ken. And you too, he wouldn't be the person he is today without you. I'd love to see that Birthday Bash in Cody some day, I didn't know they had one!
Don't pay any mind to me....been gone all afternoon so I'm back reading and catching up. Debby, you can attend a Robbie Burns' Birthday Bash! They are held world wide in honor of Scotland's poet laureate. Betcha come that Jan/Feb time frame there's one near you! His actual birthday was on January 25th but it's usually celebrated as weather and schedules permit anytime during those two months. If you've never heard Auld Lange Syne sung as the score was originally written, and with Robbie Burns' added lyrics, you can't imagine what you've missed. It's a far, far cry from folks with overflowing glasses and lampshades and glitter on their heads, I'll tell ya. Sends chills up your spine, especially when performed by the Barra MacNeils. WOW!

I have a chanter. Before Jamie left for the Navy he and I were learning the bagpipes. Once he left, I kinda lost heart. Maybe I should try again.....hmmmm.

And never lay another egg in their lives, Debby!
