How do you feed your Java babies?Great to see the progress Teila. Your new garden looks nice and shady for your girls. Jessie looks as hard working as our pooch!
I have a quail baby pipping. Last night I candled them (day 14 and 2/3rds) and discovered one had pipped internally! It was quite a surprise to see that little shadow beak! I'd been going to wait until the next day to put them into lock down, seeing as I'd added a few more after the initial lot went in, but that kind of bumped up my schedule! It has pipped externally this morning. The only thing I can think is that it was pretty hot day and night when I was collecting the eggs and there is no where cool in our house to store them, so I figured I'd see what happened. Quail eggs are supposed to be very hardy so perhaps all that heat got them slowly developing before I put them into the incubator. I had to add more water this morning as the humidity was a bit low so I dabbed it's pip with a damp finger just in case. Now I'm obsessively checking the temperature and humidity every now and then. It's so much easier when a chicken does this!
I'll try and get a decent photo of my Java babies today. They are so bristly with pin feathers.
Here's my spikiest Java baby. They are fed at 3 hourly intervals 6 times a day with hand rearing formula (I've got the Vetafarm one). You buy it as a powder and mix each portion up with water, making sure it's the right temperature, and making a new portion each feed as it spoils quickly. I use glass eye droppers which seem to work well and are easy to sterilize. It's my birds first season breeding so I'm glad I was prepared with hand rearing formula on hand as I've needed it!How do you feed your Java babies?![]()

Java finches are a common hand reared pet in Japan so I'll be interested to see how these guys turn out. I had to hand rear two Society finches (whose parents abandoned them to help the other pair with their babies who had just fledged) and they are the cheekiest, cutest things ever. How do you feed your Java babies?![]()

Good morning!
Busy weekend, but fun. My cousin and I spent so much time together as kids, she's more like an older sister...I've really enjoyed living within 100 miles of her this past year. We spent Saturday in Fort Collins, Colorado with my SIL. Lots of interesting shops, lots of people. Drove home yesterday and that was a bit nerve-wracking...driving head first into 50-60 mph winds is tiring, but made it ok. It's good to be home!
