Sooooo.....remember that house that Tam just bought and you all asked for "before" and "afters"? Now, her bedroom still needs the drywall finished and painted, and what the previous owners were thinking with that bedroom window is anyone's guess! Cardboard? A badly fitting room air conditioner? Those were the things we didn't get to before Ken's surgery. But you gotta know, she has done every bit of the rest of the work in there all by herself!! She still has a ton of pictures and stuff to hang yet too, but some of the walls (yes, even the inside walls because this old house was added on to) are stucco, so it takes some work to get stuff hung! But all in all, I think it's pretty remarkable in just a couple of weeks, plus working full time!

Thanks for sharing Blooie - Tam has worked very hard! And it's looking gorgeous - very light and inviting for sure! Good luck with your little chicks and it sounds like they'll be in the best hands while you are away.

Here are my three little birdies before they had their faces washed. It was just too good an opportunity to miss taking a photo of them all together on one hand - usually I have one on each hand and am trying my hardest to keep the third from hopping off the edge of the table.



I re-candled their mother's eggs and all 6 are now developing - one must've been too young for me to see it the first time. That does worry me a bit with their track record, and the male still doesn't seem to be helping with the incubating, like he should. So I'll just have to keep an eye on them. It doesn't help that they have chosen a box right above the aviary door, so the female frantically flies out of the box every time I have to go in. The wood shavings on the aviary floor are soaked (and the bird seed has sprouted) but with a broody button quail in the bottom I don't want to clean it out and upset her. I really don't have a spare cage if she abandons her eggs again!

Good morning!

Blooie, Tam's house is looking great, she's made a lot of progress getting it all fixed up. I love the arched doorways and the big kitchen.

J, great picture of your 3 little ones all in one hand! Good luck with hatching the 6.


DH helped me put together the brooder last night. Today I need to get it dressed up with bedding and such. Chicks tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!
 
Mine are here! Ken ordered 15 Silkies. I didn't hold out much hope for them. I called the PO in Lovell yesterday to remind them that I had chicks coming and asked them to call for pickup me rather than having the chicks waiting there in Lovell until the truck loads and leaves for Cowley at 9:00 am. The postmaster there said, "I hope they're alive. Most of the shipped chicks this year haven't been." <Gulp> One man ordered 50 Cornish. 4 were alive on arrival. Doesn't do much to inspire confidence!

The chicks were hatched on Monday and shipped on Monday from Missouri. They arrived in Casper at 7:11am and there they sat. And sat. They were loaded on the truck to head for Lovell at around 3am. I got the call around 6 this morning that they were there. So 4 days from shipment to delivery, and 15 hours at the sorting facility in Casper. When we opened the box at the Post Office, imagine everyone's grins when 17 perky little Silkies cheeped at us and tried to get out! There is one who isn't looking very strong and another little one that is so stinking tiny compared to the others, so I won't be surprised to lose them, although of course, I'll do what I can.

But I gave 'em all a dose of Nutri-drench, helped them figure out the waterer, then sprinkled some food down. A few ate - most hightailed it under Mama Heating Pad and that's where they are now - pretty content. They're kinda crowded in there but they'll go outside in a couple of days. Just want to make sure they are all doing well first, and make it easier for Katie to watch them while we're gone.

Blooie, those babies are gorgeous! Hopefully they will all make it, for Katie's sake.

Drumstck Diva, my Javas aren't feeding themselves yet but they are exploring the food so that's a start. They are just on 5 weeks old now and the all knowing internet says they wean at about 50 days old, so I've a wee ways to go yet. But they are very sweet babies so I don't mind.

We will probably have no power soon. They are replacing 4 power poles on our road just up from us. Being on tank water it means that we have no water if there is no power. So that will be fun. I've got a thermos to keep some water hot to make up baby bird food. I'm just a little worried about the quail chicks. They are 2 and a half weeks old now so they have a good amount of feathers, but it's a reasonably cool day here. I've got a hot water bottle I can give them and if worse comes to worst I'll put the fire on for them.
