The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

Blooie, those babies are gorgeous! Hopefully they will all make it, for Katie's sake.

Drumstck Diva, my Javas aren't feeding themselves yet but they are exploring the food so that's a start. They are just on 5 weeks old now and the all knowing internet says they wean at about 50 days old, so I've a wee ways to go yet. But they are very sweet babies so I don't mind.

We will probably have no power soon. They are replacing 4 power poles on our road just up from us. Being on tank water it means that we have no water if there is no power. So that will be fun. I've got a thermos to keep some water hot to make up baby bird food. I'm just a little worried about the quail chicks. They are 2 and a half weeks old now so they have a good amount of feathers, but it's a reasonably cool day here. I've got a hot water bottle I can give them and if worse comes to worst I'll put the fire on for them.

That's hard being without power but it sounds like you have a good plan for the birds. Hope it's back as quick as possible!

Good morning folks

Blooie Tam’s place looks amazing! Yikes on the 4 out of 50 survival rate; that is so sad. Your little ones are absolutely adorable and I am so pleased that they made it; it sure is a tough start for such little ones but they are sitting pretty now with their new mums

J beautiful pictures of your bubs! Gees, not having power with all your young birds is not good; I hope it all goes well.

N F C it is tomorrow here! Bring on the chickies

LOL, Teila you know you're ahead of my good ol' USA time...chickies will be coming home tomorrow (Saturday for me)

You can bet I'll be taking lots of pictures. That's something I wasn't very good at with my last ones and I always regretted it. Not this time! Those babies are going to grow up thinking my face looks like a camera!

Blooie, so glad you chicks made it! They sure are cute

Has Katie seen them yet?
Nope, she had some after school activities today and she won't be home until around 6:30, doggone it! But Kendra has.....what a hoot!

Okay, @JaeG I'm going to just come right out and ask it...do they grow into their beaks? I'm not trying to be a smart aleck - but.......

Javas have big beaks, it's true. So, no, their beaks are the same proportion as an adults. They often get labeled as an aggressive finch because they are bigger in size anyway and like to bicker amongst themselves, but it's nothing serious. Even these babies will yell at each other at times but it's just them posturing.

The power was off for just under 3 hours in the end so it must've been a straight forward job despite the frequent, heavy showers of rain. It wasn't supposed to rain today! My quail were fine with the house warm so that was good.

Hi and Good Morning...trying to catch up, sorry if I missed anyone's news. I had been "under the weather" for NINE days now - One round of antibiotics and still sick
hit.gif
. Guess my immune system is down a bit - working 12 hour shifts sick and even a day off here and there to recuperate has not helped. Temp was 101.7 yesterday - so started another strong round of antibiotics last nite, took a really strong knock out cough med last night and feel some better this am - although dull in thoughts - maybe will perk up when that cough med wears off. I have 2 days to try to get well before the shifts begin again:( I did get some blood work yesterday and everything was fine - my glucose value was only 109 after eating 2 fresh, warm Krispy Kreme donuts, so ate a third one

Blooie - I love what Tam has done with her new home, and in such a short time. The video is so impressive - you have a steady hand ( my walk thru videos make one seasick). Congrats on the baby chicks - hope the weak ones perk up and survive.

Debby - I thought your babies would arrive today, but only one more day !! Hope they are healthy. Will you be brooding inside your home? I found out the reason I couldn't get mine on time, the owner of the local store told DH almost all in a shipment of 75 chicks arrived dead
hit.gif
. I think she told the young store workers the shipment was shorted to avoid their tears. She is getting a replacement end of April - praying those don't get any delays during their shipment, so I can join in the baby chick adventure..
fl.gif
. I didn't need electrolytes with my first ones, but maybe I should be prepared and stock up. What do you use? Is there a brand name I can find and get?

JaeG - those babies are so, so cute. I love those big beaks - they have character. Glad the power interruption was short - boy that would have been a nightmare if the workers had run into trouble.
