My Dad was a gunner aboard Navy planes. His ship was the USS Franklin, there's quite a story about that ship if you'd care to read about it:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Franklin_(CV-13)

After the ship was bombed, Dad and a lot of other sailors spent a lot of time floating in the Pacific until they could be rescued. He said the thing that kept him calm was remembering all the hours he had spent as a boy floating down the river with his best friend while growing up in Iowa. As fate would have it, his childhood friend was one of the pilots flying the rescue missions to pull the guys out of the ocean. A lot of men were lost in the attack or in the water, but not my Dad, thank God. He was always the calm in the storm in our family.

This hickory tree by our house reminds me of the hickory tree by the house in our childhood home. The nuts would fall on the front walk and make an awful mess after the squirrels chewed them up. Our tree here keep dropping nuts on our metal roof. Bonk! What a racket! I have only seen one squirrel here since we moved in during May this year. I can't believe it because we live in the woods. Must be predators taking them out.
