The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

I can't believe it because we live in the woods. Must be predators taking them out.
Possibly. I have the same "thought". Lived in a neighborhood of houses cheek by jowl on tiny lots, backed up to a tree filled ravine and a neighborhood park across the street. Squirrels EVERYWHERE. They would cross the road on the road or the power wires. All over the yard, raiding bird feeders, etc. Now I live out in the country, 3 big trees near the house, bought the place 6 years ago. I've seen 2 squirrels and I found one of them in late spring when I went to "open" the pool a few years ago.

I have to ASSUME foxes or something are getting whatever squirrels might be around. Or they all moved to town where the living is easy with plenty of "restaurants" to choose from. ;)

We got snow this afternoon! It was a bit mixed with rain but enough has stayed on the ground to see it on the foothills around us.

That's about 2 months earlier than last year when we didn't get snow until Thanksgiving.

OHLD, pink babies! Love the way mama rabbits build their fur nests.

I wish something would eat all these bugs that show up in my garden eating my plants.
Do you know what you need? Chickens! J/K but they do like bugs. They also like whatever-it-is-you-are-trying-to-grow, unfortunately. If only we could train them to gently pick off all the bugs and not demolish the plants they'd be perfet. sigh.

I keep hearing that old song in my head...to dream the impossible dream...:lau

(But you're right, that would be so very helpful!)

I think i may put hardware cloth around my beds, if husband does not object. Of course, that will not stop bugs. Tonight before dark i chopped up left over peppers and onions and sprinkled them around on the ground near my new sprouting plants. I figure it can't hurt and it might help. My cukes are so small and cute! Can hardly wait until they are big enough to eat.
Maybe when my chickens get bigger they can go on a field trip to the garden if i screen in my beds. They are welcome to any bugs they find!

I have almost 100 chickens running amok. Some garden beds have fences around them but chickens can still catch bugs on the perimeter. They are an efficient group. It has been a buggy year here, I can't imagine what it would have looked like without the chickens and muscovy ducks doing daily bug patrols.

Good morning Sour, DMC, et al!

Guess winter is sneaking up on us up here in WY. We're at 60* now but that's the warmest it's going to be all day...temps will keep dropping through out until we get into the 30's tonight. Ready or not, here it comes!

OHLD, your bunnies are cute! We used to raise the California and NZ meat rabbits back in Florida but they weren't for fun (if you know what I mean).

DMC, how's the pup coming along?

Sour, I said it already once today but have to repeat...it's great to have you back!
Hi Debby! Hurricane Hattie as she's been named is cute but she's a puppy....destruction every where she goes. Craig weighed her this morning and she's 39 lbs. He also said he needed to go on a diet cuz he had to weigh himself first to get her weight:lol:Anybody have an opinion on Nexgard or Heartgard for dogs. I had to weigh her for dosing. Expensive as heck so wondering if there's an equally good cheaper version. This is vet recommended of course:rolleyes:I got charged an additional $8 for getting them from the vet. When she's a steady weight I can buy a full box instead of 1 at a time. Anyway...you got snow today? It's very humid here today and we are supposed to get rain tonight. I would like to see a frost just to kill the mosquitoes. The 9 inches of rain we got a few weeks ago caused a massive amount of them to be hatched and they are aggressive. Are you enjoying your lighter schedule?
