The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

The chickens are out in their runs, the mossy logs are dragged to the fire pit and the laundry is washing. The garden has the covers removed and the leaves are waiting to be raked. Hubby is out there trying to shoot a chipmunk or something up in the eaves. I am so flipping mad these guys do not finish this work! They are not here yet and it is noon. I think hubby should get new guys. This stress is so not worth it!

Zazzle(mostly) is in California when they hit midnight - it's 2 am for me. So I've been going on at 2am to check what their deal for the day is. Today(Sat) it is 60% off throw pillows. But I'm pretty sure they go lower, so I only ordered one today. So I can get to bed now because I ordered, and then check around 2 am each day to see if anything interests me.

Monday(I hope) will be tote bags, I go nuts over those. I remember last year the best deal was 75% off so I had to go crazy buying them. Most of them are still stacked up in another room because I didn't know what to do with them.

Ron not sure about kitchen stuff because I mainly buy throw pillows, tote bags, magnets, sometimes business cards(for my friends) . They have phone cases and stuff but, models change so often and phone sizes, that I wouldn't advise getting one.

They also sell bona fide postage stamps with your photo(or theirs) or design on them, and cost more than regular stamps - sometimes $ 10. off a card of 20. But these are not forever stamps.

They have many expensive items that I wouldn't buy regardless of discount, like blankets, watches, and so on - because I prefer a brand name & warranty for those.

PS they have mouse pads - even one with "Baby Groot," on it, or they can make them with whatever photo you want to use (no extra charge) etc.
Thanks! I will check them out. I bought leaf lard for pie crusts from Etsy. I have an account with them now. Cracks my daughters up!

Just trying something out...don't mind me

Ha, it worked! Just a funny smiley I copied.

@ronott1 what's "leaf lard"?
Leaf lard is rendered fat from the kidneys of a pig. Regular lard is from the belly. Leaf lard has less of a pork smell to it. It Makes the most flaky pie crust but you can use it for other purposes too.

Hi everyone - lots to catch up on here. Despite not celebrating Thanksgiving down under all the retailers here are still doing 'Black Friday' deals etc. I've done a bit of shopping online for Christmas (toys and books for the kids). I wouldn't go near the actual shops though - I hate shopping even when it's not busy!

I lost one of my Java finch chicks but it was half the size of the other two so something wasn't right. But I've had two Society finch chicks hatch out in the aviary so that cheered me up. They are so darn cute! They have a very few odd tufts of down so they look pretty funny. I'll have to download the photo off my phone soon so I can share. I must take a photo of the Javas too - they aren't quite so ugly now their pin feathers are coming through.

And I had our disabled Button quail (she slipped her hock joint as a chick) sitting on, what I thought were infertile eggs. Except one wasn't, so she's now a proud mother of one little chick. Birds!

Our weather has gone from being quite cool to suddenly hot and humid. It wasn't so humid yesterday which was lovely! Hopefully today will be cooler as it's cloudy this morning.

I'd never heard of Leaf Lard either - interesting!

Since the hydrogenated oil companies and then the sugar industry demonized lard and butter, we have lost track of how good it is for baking and etc.

What they did was criminal and it turns out sugar and crisco are horrible for us! Butter and lard are currently nutritional neutral foods.

Yes, I only use butter - lard is harder to come by here. But the price of butter is ridiculous at the moment - we get it in 500gram blocks which is about a pound. At the moment it's around $6 NZD which is around $4 USD. I remember when you could get it on special for 0.99c (about 0.70c for you guys) and that was not so long ago! They claim it's because there's more of a demand for the milk/cream they use to make it, yet cream is the same price. It'll be cheaper to keep a cow soon! Not that I'd be complaining... not that we'd be allowed to keep one where we are currently.

We are lucky enough to have access to raw milk so I should try making my own butter. The government changed the rules a little while ago to say you had to pick up the raw milk directly from the farm, whereas ours gets delivered to a local health food shop who kindly let everyone in our area pick it up from there. So until the farm worked out how to get around that (and they did) I had no milk. I tried the unhomogenized stuff from the supermarket (still pasteurized though) but my stomach did not like it!!! My gut obviously likes all the good, live bacteria in real milk. So we had to travel across Auckland (no mean feat these days) to get some from a small farm. Thankfully my supply was restored. It's so delicious!

I had to look up Crisco. Vegetable shortening! I know that stuff (readily available at the supermarket). Unlike lard, though they do have duck fat at a ridiculous price (though compared to butter it's not actually that bad)! Crazy!

I am sorry you can't get good fats there!

I bought a 3.5 pound jar of Ghee(clarified butter) for $18.00 from Costco. I love it!
