The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

I agree @oldhenlikesdogs Sometimes it is very obvious that you are talking to a kid and other times they can blow right through my radar. Pages into a thread they will say something like...well, I can't do that my mom and dad.......fill in the blank. Usually I do a face palm at that point and get the heck out of Dodge.

Yes, it's a sad situation. I'm sitting here with one of our well loved dogs curled between DH and myself on the sofa. The other 3 are lounging about, warm, pampered and happy.
i cannot imagine and so I too hope for a miracle.

I know you love dogs - would you mind looking at this post #1 ?

A member is having concerns about below freezing temps and his labrador is in labor.

I stayed away from that post for many reasons. First allowing a dog to become 'accidentally' pregnant is negligent, and then not providing heat during whelping is sheer neglect. Over the years I have raised dozens of litters in the winter - it's easier to provide heat than it is to cool outside dogs in the summer. "Easier to provide heat" is the key here. Whelping boxes set up with whelping ovals or heating pads sure guarantee survival of the pups. In this instance I regard the parents as most derelict, and will not unload on the concerned kid. I agree with @rjohns39 that this is a lose/lose situation.

Oh i forgot to post. @bruceha2000 these are the graters we used. Mom says the blue one sucks but idk, i didn't use it. And we grated it exactly like this, side to side. Probably not how you're supposed to do it? But we were in a hurry/stressed out/wanted it to go in the measuring cup.

Will post some pics from today later.

Bruce, did you get snow?

Good morning everyone. To those in the UK, Happy Boxing Day.

Hope y'all survived Christmas unscathed and are looking forward to New Years Eve.

It's flippin cold here. 5 degrees when I woke up and now up to 7 with snow flurries. I cannot avoid bundling up and trudging out to take care of the chickens. I'm taking them a bowl of hot oatmeal and mash to appease them for having to stay inside this week. I think it's looking to be fairly miserable temp wise here all week but edging towards 40 by next Sunday.

Think SPRING everybody! Only 3 months away and counting.

Versus deli counter cheese. Much drier and different. Idk how to explain it.
Since I don't eat either, I really don't know. But they probably do have to do something different to get those slices to a texture that the wrapping machine doesn't destroy them and they don't break up when unwrapped. So the two probably are different in some ways.

I suspect you did it the only way you could. Now I see why the grating was a PITA though. Seems you would need 3 hands, 2 to hold the grater and one to run the cheese across the surface while the grater wants to move in the same direction.

We have one like this:

A cheap $7, there are more expensive ones. You might be able to buy one of these at the grocery store or in the kitchen section of a hardware store.

Stand it in a big bowl and hold it down with one hand and hold the cheese with the other. You don't HAVE to use a bowl but I figure that way there is not need to make sure the counter is really clean ;) You could just do it onto a cutting board as well.

With a box grater you are pushing both the cheese and the grater down onto a solid surface so you don't have to fight against yourself. I think it would be substantially easier than the kind you have, plus the grating surface is probably twice the size of yours. It has small holes on one side, large on the other. Can't say I've ever tried to slice using the 3 wide cutters nor the really fine grater nibs on the side opposite those. I think that would be used for really hard cheese like Parmesan that you want fine like it comes out of a shaker.

Bruce, did you get snow?

Only maybe 2-3". Mr. NOAA missed by a fair bit. I'm not complaining though, the 30 mile trip down to the in-laws was a non issue.

I apologize for dragging folks into a thread they preferred to avoid...and promise not to do it again. That's my first New Year's Resolution likely not to be kept :lau.

Fortunately y'all warned me not to look and I didn't! Sounds really bad. :(
