Do chickens eat fish? One more thing I didn't know.
My chickens will eat any kind of meat, fat or gristle (when cut up into small bits) as far as I can tell. They don't eat the salmon skin but they will pick it clean. They also won't eat wooly bear caterpillars. I guess they don't like "fur" in their mouths ;)

@Teila sounds like you've found a good friend in Gai. How nice she'll set you up with some guppies and pond grass. How are your ponds coming along, just about ready to get them going?

@JaeG I came across this picture today and thought of you with your little birds:

Years past I was never interested in indoor birds... Fast forward, get ducks, chickens and turkeys and all feathered friends are awesome. I sit out on my deck and watch the wild birds with a whole new interest.

Most chicken feed has fishmeal. Hopefully manhaden, which is the best.

Too cute! I needed a giggle after finding a few blooming mites in the chicken coop as I was cleaning it out. Horrid things. So I've painted the inside with a strong solution of neem oil and I have some powder with all sorts of mite repelling things in it to sprinkle in there once it's all dried. That should knock them back. We've been poisoning rats lately - it seems when the rats turn up, so do the mites. :he

Unfortunately, I've seen the same thing. :hit

Isn't it RJ or is it Ron who says feed sick chickens salmon? You never saw that?

Guilty. For the vast majority of nutritional issues either canned pink salmon with some boiled or scrambled eggs or raw beef liver with the same eggs.

Canned pink salmon is loaded with vitamins, protein, amino acids, omega-3/6 fats, etc. Eggs have the perfect balance of amino acids for a bird even though the protein is pretty low. Combining the two is a good approach to first aide dietary needs. Raw liver lacks the fats and has a higher concentration of B vitamins and the rest of the goodies. So again paired with eggs is a good think.

Hey bruceha2000 I am not getting too many guppies off her as our ponds are nowhere near as big as hers. I have not really thought what to do if we experience a population explosion but will cross that bridge when we come to it. They have to survive first ;)

Blooie yesterday was only the third time I have met up with Gai but yes, we hit it off immediately and I believe will remain good friends.

Progress pic on the ponds [seen as N F C asked how they were coming along].

Besides the obvious prettifying of the structure, addition of more vegetation etc, not much left to do. The middle small pond you can see resting on the timber on the medium, middle pond needs to be installed in place, slightly higher. Then, we just need to clean it, run it for a week to check it out and then it should be good to go:

Mine love canned fish!! And sometimes they eat whole fish although it's weird, lately they've been turning their noses up at it. I've bought them fresh trout and frozen tilapia (thawed of course) and they won't eat it. :( just tossed out there whole though. Maybe they don't like the skin?

Dog won't touch it either.

I've never given mine meat scraps but always wanted to.

I have posted about using catfood that has yams and salmon in it.

Chickens will go crazy for fish!

True.

Thanks for the tip RJ!

What about for dogs?

We had 2 guppies in the 29 gallon aquarium, along with other fish. Then we had a lot of guppies. So many that I started up the other 29 gallon aquarium. Sold the babies back to the guy that had the tropical fish store where I got all my tropical fish. Great deal for DD1, I got store credit from him and she got cash from me. Of course that was ~ 15 years ago when she was 9.

At some point we had an unexplained die off of the guppies. Didn't get more.
