The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

It's maybe 5 months old. The previous machine did this after only a couple of weeks so we upgraded to this one. The guy said they are flat out at the moment fixing appliances. I was thinking it must be all the ones people got in the Christmas and New Year sales that are now acting up. It really doesn't say much for 'quality' does it? :he

I must download my camera as I had some weird fungus in my backyard this morning! It seriously looked like someone had thrown up! Bizarre!

I've got two more Coturnix quail hatching so Colossus will have some friends who understand him soon. We might have to call them King and Kong. It's a wonder anything hatches for me - I'm a serial staggered hatcherer.
I am sorry about the computer!

At the University I order in mostly Business class Dells. I have not had to send one in for repair in a long time...Knock on wood!

Is incubating hard? And is it even possible to do without reading that 101 thing? Not that I'm going to be incubating any time soon or even all (I would probably buy chicks before I ever did that) but that article is LONG and I'm lazy but also it's really confusing and overwhelming and also not organized the best even though I know she's really knowledgeable so I'm wondering if it's possible to buy a good incubator, a separate thermometer to calibrate (brinsea spot check?), and hatch chicks without killing them?????? Without reading that??

I haven't read it and I do everything wrong (well, not so much 'wrong', just different, well, some things 'wrong' I suppose), but quail eggs are tough I think. Not sure chickens or ducks would be quite so forgiving. My incubator is a cheap one, I get huge temperature swings depending on the weather, I candle every single day, right up to hatching, I do staggered hatches so the humidity is usually higher than ideal for younger eggs, I hatch with my humidity between 80-87%, and I recently realised how much my incubator vibrates and makes the eggs vibrate. So it's a real wonder that anything hatches but they are my own super fresh eggs which I thinks makes a big difference to how tough the resulting embryos are.

Thanks for all the info!!

Awesome! Will you be hatching some soon?
I have no idea, but spring is coming and i want to have a place to put some if i find them. If i have to go with eggs i can put them in the brooder once they hatch. I may have to get young turkeys unless i find adults but i need a place to put them. So incessant building.
