I never had any luck growing alfalfa. Might try it here though.
The trick to get alfalfa to grow well, is have the soil prepared where it's almost like dust. Since it's planted very shallow, if there's lots of clods it doesn't take root very well.

Your welcome, I use to grow 16 acres of alfalfa. Bale it and take it to the feed mill and have my show calf feed made with it. Even though it re-seeds it's self about every 3 yrs. it needs to be replanted.
If you decided to grow it, check around with other farmers in the area if they grow it, that way you can find out which variety does best in your area. Feed and seed stores will sell you anything, so not good to ask them! ;)
