So sad.

A young man in his

A young man in his mid twenties they say

Yes, in his 20s. Just terrible.

How terrible. No water near me, good thing, NO swimming genes in my immediate family. Don't like seafood either. Sure do appreciate a nice bloody steak though. Only get one when my son comes out to visit and restaurant hops.

I have always hated the beach, sand gets everywhere and our water is freezing and salt water is gross, but now with the sharks I hate it more. I have always been scared of sharks but everyone always said there weren't sharks here. Well, now there are. All the more reason not to swim. Hate pools too, too many chemicals. Although I do like lakes, ponds, etc.

Isn't Cape Cod cold water? I didn't think that people eating sharks lived in cold water.

There have always been sharks here but never very many but in recent years, the seal population has exploded and so more and more Great Whites have been moving in. There was another attack last month, an older gentleman, but he survived by punching it in the gills. He is still in physical therapy/rehab though. That attack was only 4.5 miles from this one and the first since 2012*. Today's attack was the first fatal shark attack in Massachusetts since 1936. So 82 years. Before that there was one in 1830 and 1896. So shark attacks are rare.

*according to this there was one in 2014 and I do remember that one so idk why all the articles say 2012. I guess first one on the Cape since then? Cause the 2014 one was Plymouth. Two kayakers. Also no injuries. It bit the kayak. Maybe the no injuries part is why it's not mentioned?

Anyway, according to that site there have only been 7 attacks. They are very rare. Or at least they WERE until all the seals moved in or rather exploded since there's always been seals.

Hm, interesting

They are quite curious, and they find out information about things by biting them. Eating machines, evolved to kill and eat whatever is available. Did you know killer whales will kill Great whites just to eat their livers?

Although that thing says they need to eat more being warmblood and the guy was on a boogie board like 300 yards off shore and probably looked like a seal. Obviously terrible what happened and not his fault he got attacked but I don't think sharks purposely track down people to attack them. That said, I still wouldn't swim in the ocean anymore and I DO think that they need to manage/control the seal population around here. It has exploded. There are soooo many seals now. They're everywhere.

Exactly and they eat more being warmblood and as big as they are (up to 15 or 20 feet and almost a ton). It's tragic but the kid probably looked exactly like a seal and the shark made a mistake. I did not know the whales ate the liver but I saw part of a documentary recently filming the whales hunting the sharks.

The one that says they need to eat to stay alive??

Since it is pretty commonly agreed that great whites attacking humans are mistaking them for seals, I really wonder why the wet suits the victims are wearing are black. Why not make them multi colored striped and anything but black?
