Sharron, I was anxiously awaiting an answer to your question as I have the same issue when I hatch. My first hatch, I didn't candle those that didn't hatch, just put them in the compost bin, which was apparently hot enough... A few hours later the bin was chirping, opened up to find a little chick standing there. Now I candle non hatchers.

:eek:, the reason i always candle, is i keep hoping that they will hatch and i never throw out until it turns a darker color, not real dark but an off color, you can usually tell a alive chick, just like when they first start, it kinda turns a pinkish color but before you can see the veins
its a good thing you walked past the bin:woot

Really cute puppy... I need one, but still not ready to go down that path. Today was the day we let the new birds on pasture out of their house. Hopefully they'll return tonight (there were there for 5 days). A fairly large number of them went right through the fence and off to forage.
