The off grid cost will go down as Lithium ion batteries become more reasonable.

Here the Tesla battery is being used for that purpose
A guy I know has a 14 KWh Tesla battery hooked to his solar system. Hasn't used any utility power since it was put in in June. We will see how well it carries through the winter. He's not expecting it to be total coverage since Nov, Dec, Jan tend to produce less power than is used. But if there is a power outage, he is all set for the basics - well, lights, refrigerator and freezer.

You won't catch my home smelling like that Sean. And you probably don't have the highly developed sense of smell to detect ice cream in the freezer. I have to say, though I haven't had ice cream since Saturday - I am trying to give it up. Costs too much money to support my habit. BTW freezer only has bread, and Ore Ida potatoes in it, oh and
blue ice packs for shopping days.

Well that's too bad dd, my home smells of those wonderful memory fragrances! :D
Especially the cinnamon fragrance. :love Oh, and forgot sage! Have to smudge the house in sage or sweet grass! Keeps evil spirits away and welcomes the friendlys! ;)

Jae, does that 25 year payback include estimated increases in the cost of utility power? They keep jacking the rates here and putting on other fees.

I just based it on what our bill costs us. Power hasn't gone up here much as there's a lot of competition between companies and even online calculators that allow you to compare companies to see which gives you the best deal. The government is currently reviewing power prices as there are a lot of people struggling due to unemployment and low wages. With bad credit ratings they aren't in a position to shop around for a better deal and they end up being penalised for paying their bill late, so it's just a vicious cycle for them. They are trying to work out how to support those people and ensure they get a fair deal.

We are definitely installing a wet back on the fire as we have our fire going all winter, and we might look at solar panels without the battery as I'm home during the day to utilise them.

Our roof is so tall with the loft and vaulted ceiling that the guineas would have to fly up like 20 feet. Plus we did not encourage them to come near the house. They are fed in the hoop coop only.
My Guineas used to line up on the roof in the morning to yell at me to get the breakfast going. Twenty feet up or more.

I miss that morning greeting.

Fire danger is getting so high here that PG&E is thinking about cutting power in parts of 12 counties. The wind is blowing high and the conditions are close to those that caused the bad fires in Sonoma last October>

Woodland is in Yolo county and is not in danger from this.
SDG and E does this as well... We dont get the same wind but we do get big winds this time of year

I am hoping to setup the Batteries as a back up and to use to alleviate power fluctutations .... They are expensive though. up to 8K and 2K for installation.

I sure do hope the price goes down. The Chinese are making huge inroads in the technology...
