I just had surgery, am doing well with my recovery.

I like the Lighting Nugget Firestarters I get at Lowes. Have tried others and they just didn't cut it.

we get our starters at the same place we buy the rice coal, its only about ten miles from us, lowes is about 20 but might just try those when we get up that way next time

we've had 3 snowfalls that stuck already. Wednesday it got up to 24. Go figure.

Glad that you're recovering. Was it a major surgery?

We just use sticks and paper to start fires.

we used to down home but in the small rice coal heater, can't reach down far enough, same with the warm morning stove

Great to see you @The Farmers' Daughter - glad your house is progressing in spite of the hiccups.

@bruceha2000 I've always wanted goats so it's good goat country! There's a rescue place here that has baby feral goats at the moment. They are so cute. Maybe next year.

There's a breed of sheep a family friend has called Damara sheep and they are more like a goat too, used to harsh landscapes and preferring browsing to grazing. They are a hair sheep and very hardy and maybe I could bear to grow some up to eat. Our son loves sheep so he's desperate to have some pet ones (so not sure how the eating part would go down). I also want to plant up an orchard somewhere, plant some hardwoods yearly to grow up for firewood, have a vegetable garden, enjoy the bird life, figure out where to put my aviaries. One side of the property slopes down gently and its clear of trees. The steep banks we'll have to plant up to stabilise them. Native flax is good for that and the tui love the nectar from the flowers. We'll see tomorrow whether we can fit the house we want where we want.
