The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

My boys used to bring them into the house quite often . They were always excited when they could "catch and release" something from outside.

That was good training for me when the oldest ended up with a Burmese Python for a pet.
That would have never happened here. Hubby is terrified of snakes. Does he still have the Python? I remember one of my social teachers had a boa constrictor and he allowed one of my classmates to bring a rabbit for it. I will never forget the trauma of that. I can still hear the squeal of it.

The python came about because oldest DS was, and still is, nuts about reptiles & amphibians (that's what he eventually got his doctorate in). We went to a reptile show in Kansas City when he was about 12. He really wanted one of the little snakes they were selling for his own...I can still remember him begging "please mom, they don't get very big". I didn't know anything about them, so agreed. We brought the little guy home in a brown paper lunch sack.

Rocko grew and grew and grew some more, got to about 7-8 feet long. DS fed him mice & rats from the pet store (which was fine with me...I hate mice & rats more than snakes). DS kept him in a huge aquarium in his bedroom until he went away for graduate school. He couldn't take Rocko with him so he advertised as "free" in the local paper. We had so many requests, could have given away 40 of them. DS found him a good home, where Rocko may still be living today.

What a good mom!

Rocko was actually pretty interesting to see growing up. And he was only one of the things DS used to bring home. We had different types of lizards, toads, turtles, snakes, etc. at various times.

I think it all started with reading dinosaur books to DS at an early age. He couldn't have a pet dinosaur so he thought reptiles & amphibians were a pretty good substitute.

Cute story!

That's awesome! I used to want a snake, and still might some day, but my parents as well as both brothers haaaateeee snakes so that'll never happen. I also want other reptiles like bearded dragon, leopard gecko, and/or crested gecko. Those might happen. They're not as "scary" lol but not right now. But I also really want pet rats or pet mice. But my parents are even more terrified of those and mom claims she'd never sleep if I got one so that's definitely not happening. Might be able to get gerbils or guinea pigs though cause those are cute and fluffy. But I kind of gave up on the small pet idea. Right now I want goats, rabbits, or quail next or a second dog or cat. None of that will probably happen though. But if I got a rabbit, I'd keep it outside this time. I used to think I wanted an indoor bird like parakeets or cockatiels or even lineolated parakeets (linnies) but they're so loud and messy and require a lot of time and attention I gave up on that idea. I do have the 4 goldfish still. I was going to rehome them and my mom's friend said she'd take them a couple months ago but nothing ever came of that and obviously going into winter it's too late to put them in a pond so I think I am going to have to get a bigger tank and keep them through the winter now. Other than that, I just have the chickens and the cat and dog. And I don't really need a dog of my own atm because I am with brother and FSIL's dogs so much. Maybe more chickens eventually though. Mine are 3 years old as of yesterday. I missed their birthday lol whoops
