I read where some give their chickens corn during the winter with the thought it makes the birds warmer. Is there any science/fact behind that? Our winters get so cold but the chickens seem to be doing ok. If it would make them more comfortable, I'd do it but is it true about corn or is that just folk lore?

I've heard a lot of people saying that with chickens. I used to give my goats corn on cold nights as well. Don't know the science behind it

Thanks Pert. I'm guessing the thought behind it is that the birds burn up calories digesting the corn and that translates to body warmth? But is it true, that's what I wonder.

Of course I wonder about a lot of things. :gig
 
With horses we simply fed more hay... the process of fermentation in the gut helped keep them warmer in winter... and I read that accross the board with horses that arent working or growing babies.

There are similarities between the digestive systems of horses and chickens, Cecum, digestive flora and fauna, ...

Corn has alot of sugar which burns quickly....
