The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

I've heard that it's false. I feed mine whole corn every day though. Evidently it helps keep their legs a nice yellow.
From everything I have read and also first hand experience, birds have a high metabolism rate. Birds in the wild will fill their crops just before going to roost. This allows them to maintain their body heat overnight, and they don't have to use their stored bodyfat to keep their internal core temperature up. This is why when snow is on the ground, they can not find enough to eat and have to relie on the stored fat to maintain body heat. Also the reason for a large die off in winter. This is where people say feeding corn will provide heat by raising their body temperature....not necessarily an accurate statement but this is how "old wives tells" become engrained as a popular myth.

Todd isn't from TX by any chance, is he? You're not anywhere near there right? So I guess not. But that would be something if he was Franklin's daddy lol probably not but the resemblance is uncanny. I hope you don't mind I showed FSIL his picture and she agrees and wanted to know. But of course I am sure he is not his dad but maybe the same mix.

From yesterday.

I have no idea where he originated, but you're right about the coloring.

No rain at the moment, but they are predicting 2" of ice!
Oh, isn't THAT nice??? :sick

I have an actual chicken question for you all...(shocking, I know )

I read where some give their chickens corn during the winter with the thought it makes the birds warmer. Is there any science/fact behind that? Our winters get so cold but the chickens seem to be doing ok. If it would make them more comfortable, I'd do it but is it true about corn or is that just folk lore?
I'd go with folklore. Scratch grains shouldn't be more than about 10% of their diet. Too much corn. I feed the same year round. Pellets always available, some BOSS in the morning, some scratch before roost time.

we feed ours corn in the winter, they seem to like it , like you i don't know if it really works for the heat but they do love it, even the young ones
They would like corn in the spring, summer and fall as well. Chicken crack, Halloween candy to children.

I'm having a really hard time getting Bingo to come. My vet said that most LGDs don't respond to that command. They're busy doing their job.
He comes! When he is good and ready. He has to think you have a better reason for him to come to you than to keep doing what ever it is he is currently doing.

I'm not sure that passes the smell test. And I'd rather my slate or green legged girls not have yellow legs.

Ah okay. When I saw the coloring and even like his fur texture I was like OMG. Cause Franklin's coat is starting to change from the soft puppy coat. They got Franklin I think September 22nd so almost 2 months ago now and he was 13 weeks so he'd be about 5 months old now. Idk how long dog gestation is but is it possible he was in Texas 5-7 months ago? I'm sure there's probably lots of potential dogs that look like that though but he seems to be the same color and size and everything. The rescue said Franklin was Pyrenees/Collie but they haven't done a DNA test yet like they did with Libby. I kind of think Franklin might be part hunting breed. Mom thought English Setter, vet thought spaniel, friend thinks Golden, I think any of those, FSIL thinks Aussie, says he reminds her of hers they had as a kid. Who knows.
