All states have to go to REAL ID, some have been granted a little extra time. Since you can still use your non REAL ID license to get on a plane, MA must be one of the states granted extra time. It was supposed to be done by Jan 2018. At some point in the fairly near future you will be required to get a REAL ID license and yes there are more hoops to jump through to get it.

Some border states offer enhanced ID license, which is REAL ID. It is good for crossing the border to Canada, Bermuda, Caribbean and Mexico but ONLY by vehicle or boat, not plane. It can be used to fly within the US as well. But I do have a passport (which I need to renew!) so I use that when I fly. You can get a passport card when you get the passport and that is good for the same things as the Passport Card. The benefit of getting it when you get the passport: It is good for 10 years like your passport is. An enhanced license is still only 4 years. We do have to pay extra for the enhanced license, DW figured since she was renewing her passport might as well get the passport card and skip the extra cost of the enhanced license.

Thanks! I didn’t realize it was already supposed to be done. We must’ve gotten extra time, like you said. Although I think the date I saw is when every state must have it by/when they will start enforcing it. So I think they maybe will not give any more time.

So you are required to get it? Seems dumb if you can also use your passport for things and would rather do that ha but I guess I will comply lol

Huh, wonder why you can use it for those 4 countries? I get Canada and Mexico cause they're our neighbors but wonder why the others. And wow I never about a passport card!!! Thanks!!!
