The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

12°F here this morning but it made it to the upper 30s in the afternoon. Should be mid 40's tomorrow and Thursday. Rain Thursday night through Friday.

What, no pictures?

I tried to but I was upstairs and they didn’t turn out through the window (focused on the screen instead of the birds). :( I should have come down and taken them through the door though! Didn’t really think of it. I didn’t want to open a door and scare them but I forgot one of the doors and window down here doesn’t have a screen so I probably could have gotten a picture. Whoops :(

The tom was gorgeous. I wish I had come downstairs and at least taken a picture of him.

If they come back, I will take lots of pictures!! :D

I am trying to get them to stick around. They haven’t been back yet today but a couple years ago now (wow can’t believe it was that long ago already!!) I befriended a bunch of turkeys. :D we had a ton hanging around the yard, way more than today, and they would sometimes even fly up on the new chicken coop when we were building it, and they stuck around for maybe like a week or two. Well anyway, it took me about a week to befriend them but I finally did. :D they never like ate out of my hands or anything but I would toss BOSS to them and they would come pretty close to eat it and didn’t seem scared. I am hoping to be able to do that again or at least attract them to the yard because I like watching them. I doubt these are the same turkeys though given that was 2 years ago but maybe. That group had I believe 2 or 3 toms, one or two big dominant ones and a couple younger ones. And a ton of females. They were awesome. Haven’t seen many since but now that they are back I am hoping to keep them here. I know that it is probably bad to feed wild animals too much because then they won’t forage for themselves and/or won’t be scared of people so idk that I’ll do the befriending again but I do like watching them.

Also, I think the reason they possibly haven’t been back is because I haven’t been filling the bird feeders like I was. They used to come clean up under the feeders which is how it started and then I just started giving them the seed directly but then I started filling the feeders way less and sometimes not at all. So I think I will start filling the feeders again. I want to anyway now that the other birds are back. We usually always get several birds nesting around here. There are some big huge bushes near the feeders and a birdhouse we put up and they usually always nest there. There is usually at least one bird nesting in the bushes but usually two and then last year when we put up the birdhouse, we had a bird nest in it right away. :D I like watching the song birds too. Of course, the chipmunks and squirrels usually steal a lot of the food but I like watching them too.

Any ideas on how to attract the turkeys?

I do see turkeys a lot in other areas too so I think that they move around a lot and probably have a big range but it would be cool if I could at least get them to visit more often. I’ve never even seen them with babies :( but I did see a hen with babies just down the road one time a couple years ago so I know that they do have them and raise them nearby but it would be so cool if they felt safe enough here to bring their babies here!! Maybe this year is the year with Gator gone! :fl

Although I have also heard coyotes super close so maybe they don’t feel safe. But I am sure the coyotes roam too.

The wild turkey hens on @KDOGG331's deck!

I should have run down and got pictures!! They were really close!! Like 3 of them were hanging out on it. I have the turkey poop all over the deck to prove it :lau

Also, the chickens were pretty interested in the turkeys at first and were watching them. Then they kind of went about their business but they did start watching the tom again cause he wandered pretty close to them and was still doing his dance. I think they have a new boyfriend. :lau to be fair, he did look pretty impressive :lau

We see wild turkeys as we drive up north and my sister has some that pass through occasionally. The farmers like having them around because they eat the grass grubs.

DH and my Dad have gone up to set up the chicken coop and run. We've bought a new run but are using our old, big coop which they took up today on the trailer. Our chickens didn't seem too worried at their coop disappearing and all bunked down on the run floor for the night, ignoring the roost we had put in there for them. I thought they'd be reluctant to go back in the run because we covered the now open end with a tarpaulin, but they weren't at all worried by the big, blue thing where their coop used to be. They had a wonderful time free ranging yesterday as we detatched the coop so I'll let them out again soon. We'll probably transport them up north tomorrow and my sister can keep an eye on them.

Thought I'd post some photos I took today of our babies. The slightly younger cockatiel chick now looks as big as it's sibling and seems to be feathering up faster. The older one still has thick down on its back whereas the younger ones is sparcer and has pin feathers just starting to come through. The younger has more chest pin feathers too. They love having a snuggle in a warm hand.
