kdogg, I used to start seeds in individual jiffy pellets. I'd line up flattened pellets and pour boiling water over them. They plump up fast. When they cool down I'd put seeds in the middle or seedling.
They would get lined up in hard plastic trays and covered with clear domes with vents-that I would open or close depending on how humid I wanted them to be. Then they'd go under plant lights - on ten hours a day.
Used to have a great supplier, John Cook of Cape Cod Violetry. Sadly he passed away last year ,I believe.
Thanks DD! I did a similar thing last year except instead of buying the pellets separately I bought the Jiffy trays with the pellets in them and the cheap plastic dome, those seemed to work great, but I figured I would try something different this year. And these were cheaper. Maybe I should go back to the Jiffy pellets, idk. I always have great luck with Jiffy products. Either that or I was thinking of just going outside and getting some compost/soil from the garden their gonna be in and use that. It’s really rich and good I think. I don’t have a grow light but I have been thinking of getting one. But usually I just set them near a sunny window, we have quite a few, and it seems to work well. But I would eventually like to get a grow light because you can only fit so many trays near one window and only so many windows.
That’s unfortunate he passed away!! I never even knew he was here, it sounds like he was close to me and sounds like a great place. Assuming they sold violets?? Or other stuff too??
I see real feathers there Jae!
@KDOGG331 Peat does hold a lot of water. If you are talking about the dried disks ('cause I've lost track) I'd go with the "let them soak overnight" plan. Pan of water for them to sit in and they will suck up the water.
It is loose dirt and it’s a mix of a few things. The overnight thing did seem to help and most were absorbed but there was still one or two that hadn’t so I put some soap on all of them for good measure and it soaked right up. Might try getting some compost though.
This is what I am using now, or tried to use, haven’t planted anything yet, and I also got a couple other things I could use. Will post all options and maybe someone can inform me whether any of these are good or whether I should go buy another product or just use compost or what.
So this is the one I have soaking now.
And these are the rest.
