The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

Hey Debby! Here’s a picture of my little rose bush. I love the color.

Beautiful rose! When we lived in South Dakota (1989 - 1996) we found a rose bush called “Singing in the Rain.” We bought two of them, and they were stunning, and so fragrant! They had that familiar rose scent, but with a touch of citrus. They were nearly thornless, and grew the blossoms in big bouquets on one stem. And they were hardy as all get-out, tolerating the humid, hot summers and bouncing right back to life in spring, bigger and better than the year before, even after being exposed to weeks of -30 degree temps and months with feet of snow on them. When we left there to move here, the landlord asked if we would leave them and, not knowing what we had for a place to put them or how they’d do in the desert like climate, we agreed. We figured when we could find a good spot to put one or two, we’d get them once we settled in. It’s been 23 years and we still don’t have one. We ordered a couple, but they both arrived deader than doornails. The company we got them from gave us a refund but said they couldn’t get more. After trying for about 10 years, we gave up. We’d find one, only to learn that they were out of stock. Hard to find! I think they are close to the perfect rose! They are a gorgeous apricot color, deep and rich, getting lighter as it gets later in the year. I loved them!

I’m so glad this came up. I need to have Ken look again and order them if he can. Honestly after giving up years ago, I’d all but forgotten! Thanks for the post!

That is a pretty rose DMC. My mom loved roses but the newer ones (way back in1990's) didn't have any fragrance just blossoms and thorns.

Makes me think of the" Adams family." Morticia would cut the blossoms off the roses and keep the long, long, stems covered with thorns.
Thanks DD! I love roses but not the smell.

That singin in the rain is beautiful. Reminds me of the Love and Peace one I had. I cannot keep roses bushes alive here. I’ve tried several and they’ve all died. This is a mini that I put in a pot. I wonder if this is a mixed color rose bush as the other flowers have been a pinkish yellow.

@Blooie , have you tried Roguevalleyroses.com ?

Yep. Just checked them tonight - out of stock, big surprise. We did find a place (maybe the same place) that we can place an order after July for shipping in January of 2020, but heck - I don’t even know if I’ll be around in January of 2020. <sigh>

I'm not a rose person, my mom was. I preferred winter Hardy cactus - and BOY they certainly were. I planted them on the south side of the house under the roof overhang.
They multiplied like rabbits. They were a variety of- can't remember the name. Flat pads of sometimes great size, mainly very annoying spine hairs and only a real spine here & there.

Had two kinds, one had light yellow blossoms and the other yellow with red throats gorgeous. BUT,the spine hairs were on everything, and would burrow into the skin and eventually come out some other place.

Had a gorgeous pink flowered variety from Utah but, rotted out over the winter.

I gave some pads away - some people wanted them to keep cats out of their flower beds, or dogs away from their mailbox post BUT, after they made personal contact with the spines they ended up tearing them out. Sissies.

They were fascinating plants. In late fall they would dehydrate so water in their cells wouldn't cause ruptures during prolonged bitter cold weather. The only time I lost a lot of them is when we had continual freezes and warm ups.
