The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

Kdogg maybe the fox has been someone's pet and got put out! When I used to do serious walking every day, I would pass a house a couple of blocks north of me. Twice I
saw the back door open and a fox came out. No joke. She must have at least been feeding him.

Wonder if she stopped, as we suddenly inherited a fox that made or found a den at the end of the property in a mess of Buck thorn bushes & trees and a rusted out metal shed.
Once I saw him with another fox - honestly feminine, refined looking head and they romped around for a day and never saw the second one again. Was kinda hoping I'd see babies one day but :idunnoguess it was wasn't meant to be. Or maybe the males don't help out with any litter.

Believe it or not people do keep them as pets!! Considered “exotic” or whatever. But I think foxes are illegal here. And even if not, the pet ones are usually cool colors like silver, white, black, etc. and I think a different species. Like people keep the adorable tiny little Fennec foxes and Arctic foxes and stuff like that. Probably more. This guy (or girl, don’t know) was just a regular red one. I think he’s just gotten too comfortable with people.

And aww that stinks you never saw babies from them!! I’ve never seen any either but they must be having them as there are plenty of foxes around and they seem healthy.

Although we did see one pretty mangy looking one last week. But this one was healthy. That one was interested in the chickens.

Something isn't right with a fox that is not wary of people. Could be it grew up "in town" and people fed it ('cause it was so pretty)??

Really good reason to leave the stumps. Because you KNOW there are people who don't give a carp about the damage their wake causes.

Hmmm, are you in charge of the BYC restaurant? Do you deliver?

These ones are pretty bold!! Not as bold as the coyotes but still quite bold.

We are in town despite being set back in the woods. We have close neighbors on all sides. There’s a street behind us with regular houses and then condo/townhome development in front of us. And we can see the neighbors houses/yards. Their property all buts right up to ours.

It’s also pretty developed around here and we’re close to stores and offices and stuff.

But at the same time it’s also not really developed and there’s lots of trees/wooded areas.

There’s some cranberry bogs across the street and two ponds down the street, the back one is pretty wild/protected. Also a large field.

And there’s woods connecting all this stuff.

Even our woods I think eventually lead to the pond but I’ve never tested it out. But so there are tracts where they could run without seeing people but it’s also still very close to people.

I don’t think anybody is feeding them, the people here I think are smarter than that, but who knows haha plus most have little kids and/or small pets and likely don’t want a fox hanging around. Plus I would think he would be hanging around at their house not ours?

But there is, or should be, an abundance of natural prey with all the bunnies and little rodents running around and fish at the pond if foxes eat fish? And frogs, baby geese, etc.

But maybe they compete with the hawks and coyotes? Although I think the coyotes eat deer?

But come to think of it I actually haven’t really seen any bunnies around lately. Maybe they disappear in the fall.

There are tons of squirrels though but I guess maybe those are hard to catch. They are quite fast.

I think they are just feeling a little too comfortable and moved back in without the dog around.

My son is supposed to visit in December - IF he has any vacation days left after going to New Orleans with his girlfriend first.

He told me I should move into an apartment or condo, so I wouldn't have to change my own light bulbs (I couldn't reach.) Duh! It won't happen but, I wish I would be around to see him at MY age(now) and see how agile he is.

When my parents lived in Denver, there was a female fox that had 3 kits right there in their suburban neighborhood. Everyone in the area was leaving food out for them and thought it was great fun watching them swipe newspapers and kid's toys left outside. I don't know whatever happened to them, just one day they were all gone.

Fox like that wouldn't be afraid to sit in a yard and stare at a human. I still wouldn't want them around my chickens.

Oh wow that’s ridiculous people thought that was entertaining! As beautiful as I think they (and other wildlife) are, I still respect them and treat them as wild animals and much prefer them in their natural habitat doing natural things.

I wouldn’t ever feed them or anything like that.

I actually think it’s kinda sad they had to use toys and stuff for the nest instead of natural stuff and sad they had to be fed.

An animal like that won’t find their own food they probably eventually starved when the people stopped feeding them or maybe they got hit by a car or shot by a hunter or something cause they were so fearless. :(

Feeding animals usually always ends badly for the animal. I don’t even like feeding birds or squirrels hah

But yeah, I’m starting to get nervous now with as comfortable as he seems to be and am starting to run him off every time.

I think maybe I just need to make myself scary again? Chase him off every time. Maybe get an air horn or at least some kids noise making toys or something haha

Or borrow a dog :lau

I wish we could have a full LGD but being in suburbia and with as close a neighbors as we have I don’t think it would be a good idea. Even Gator barked too much imo. Although my dad encouraged it  I was able to train him to stop when told though.

I don’t even want to get a rooster cause I’m afraid it will bug the neighbors let alone a full LGD :lau

Heck, I’m even afraid Sweetpea is too dang loud. :lau

Although that said, people do keep Pyrenees as pets now. It seems to be really common lately. Seen tons on Instagram and YouTube and, unfortunately, in rescues.

Seems to be a bit of a trend lately getting them as pets. I don’t really think it’s such a good idea. They’re wonderful dogs but really not suburban/“pet” type dogs.

I think they’re much happier with a farm and/or land to roam around on.

Although they do bond closely with their family and learn to protect them as their flock I guess. And they are very sweet and kid loving. And of course gorgeous. All of which makes them very popular I suppose.

But they’re also droolers, roamers, barkers, protective, stubborn as all get out, huge, extremely furry, etc. LOL not traits I would say make a great pet but hey.

Also there are plenty of beautiful white fluffy dogs that are a lot smaller and better suited to being a pet haha

Sorry, got off on a bit of a tangent there. :lau

I suppose if it was a rented apartment you could call the owner/manager to change light bulbs. A condo you own, you call yourself to change them.

How high up are these light bulbs? Could you get a small step ladder (if the pissyass bus guy would take you somewhere to buy it)?
