The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

Okay folks, we've had something really dangerous happen that I think others should be aware of but don't know where to post it. Looking for ideas...

For years, I've used my Weber Chimney to start my charcoal and put it on the shelf below the grill to cool. I'm anal about making sure there are no coals left in the chimney before I put it away.

So Friday we had steaks for dinner and I did my usual and put the chimney on the bottom shelf of the grill and moved on... Saturday morning we woke up late, but still dark out. I went out for my morning smoke and see a cloud of smoke around the light and smell smoke, but can't see anything burning. I investigate, even with a flash light, and nothing... Can't see anything burning and no flames.

After staring at the light for a bit, I realize the smoke is coming from my winter heater. I carefully check it for heat and it's cold, so I move it and see that the deck has red embers on it. So I work to water down the red embers. I'm totally confused as to how this is possible. So I go get the flashlight again and realize that the deck has been on fire all night long. Counting the heater, there were four propane tanks over the fire. After moving a bunch of stuff, I found more red embers and more burning wood. Dowsed everything with water and apparently succeeded in killing the fire. This never flamed up and never moved into the wall (thankfully). But is very scary. I know treated lumber is fire retardant, but this was very weird for me.

I have no idea how the fire started, why it didn't get worse and why it was so easy to put out. My best theory is that having put the chimney in the same spot for so many years the wood became susceptible to fire and spontaneously combusted.

All I lost were a couple of 2X6's and some cross beams. But this was a scary event and I think folks need to be warned that this possibility exists.
Yikes, scary! What kind of stove / heater is it?

The heater is a basic areal heater for the patio. Thankfully non of the propane tanks over the fire caught fire and the walls didn't either. I've studied pyrotechnics for years and this goes way beyond anything I would expect. I'm guessing that treated lumber is fire retardant and that was what saved us. But I really don't know...
