We had little patches of frost this morning! It's toasty inside by the fire though. DH ventured out to let the chickens out for me but I must go and give them some breakfast. At least the sun is shining.
It's early days yet but these partridge araucana chicks (just over 2 weeks old now) are feathering in fast and all but one look to have the start of peachy/girly chests. It's the boys I need - isn't that always the way?! A partridge roo crossed with birchen hens is supposed to be the best for creating brown reds but I might be trying it the other way around.
The only one that looks darker in the chest is the littlest one who has a bit of a waddle to its walk. I'd decided early on that wasn't going to be a candidate for breeding but it's super sweet though. The birchens and splash are feathering in much slower - they barely have the start of tails.
The 12 eggs I got in the hopes of a few more birchens are this time around doing really well. At this point in time (almost day 14) 10 are still going strong. I'm kinda hoping they don't all hatch as that's a lot of babies on top of the other 12.
I sure hope those awful fires can at least be contained to some extent. I read about a little calf that must've been born just before the fire swept through the field - miraculously it survived. It's nice to read stories like that amid all the destruction.
