The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

We have a new addition to the brooder. Some people DH has been helping found an injured wild turkey chick. It has one leg that looks a little swollen and it's avoiding putting pressure on it - a hawk was circling it when they found it. I'll ring the local bird rescue place for some advice soon.

Turkey are not protected here so I'm not breaking any laws by having it. I searched on here for advice but any threads about wild turkey chicks being found just have people telling the OP they've broken the law and did the wrong thing and that they should've left it where it was (even if the poor thing was injured). No helpful info. Anyone here raise turkey?

It really likes the heat lamp, calls every now and then for its family, puts up with the chicks standing on it (good thing they are a lot smaller), and it has been moving around. It even ate a bit of food before and I've given it some water.

It should be like any turkey poult!

They can be a bit needy but the chicks will help it find food and water.

Do make sure it eats and drinks though. It can take them a bit to figure that out

Thanks for the well wishes all. Hubs sanitized everything before he used it and there were three days between when the sick person used the computer and when hubs did. He also has hand sanitizer that he uses frequently so this is all precautionary. I’m sure he’ll be fine. He says he’s not sick because I’m the only one that can stand him :gigI told him he’s right.

If he's acting ornery, you know he's ok

:fl Sounds like he's been doing all the right things so hopefully he's in the clear.

I'm happy to report baby turkey is eating (copying the chicken chicks) and drinking for itself, and it is using its leg more than yesterday. I couldn't get through to the bird rescue place (they must be busy at this time of year) but its leg doesn't feel hot so I'm hoping there's no infection.

The kids brought in some grass seed heads thinking it might recognise them as food. It didn't get a look in as the chicken chicks went absolutely nuts over them, to the point where they were hanging onto them and could be lifted off the ground! 🤣 I'd never thought to bring seed heads in as entertainment for chicks.

(That chicken chick on the left makes me laugh).
