Wow, Mark, I never knew, that there were so many types of minnows!
The big pond, almost 2 acres, was here when we bought the place. It was so grown up here,
then, that we had to cut through the brush to find it. Our criteria, was to find a place in the countryside, that had a water view, and room for the dogs to run. We lucked out.
My husband gradually enlarged the 2nd part of the pond, added dams, culverts, and bridges. This will be the 4th pond, but it will flow via waterfall into the large pond. We have several springs.
Don't forget the pictures! I hope he is careful.
I guess so, we can't think of any other way that they could get there, unless birds dropped a few dozen pregnant minnows in there. It is strange.
Mark, are there any salmon minnows?![]()
Good morning, Debby.Hi Janey, I just did a quick search about minnows showing up in ponds and found this:
"The most common way minnows get into ponds is from freshwater birds, such as ducks, geese, or herons. These birds sometimes have minnow eggs stuck to their feet and they will fall off once they land in your pond."
Good morning, Debby.
I'll bet your right! Blue herons and geese frequent our ponds, and we occasionally have ducks too.
Good morning everyone!
We are having some cooler days now. It is almost cool enough (low 60s) for a morning sweatshirt, the afternoons are high 80s/low 90s. I noticed that the chickens are molting and cranky. That is unusual too; they usually don't molt until late October or November. I'm wondering if we are going to have another unusually cold winter? I love the fall, so I'm enjoying this unseasonably (for us) cool weather.Hope you have a great day Janie!
We're actually getting a rain shower right now, it feels wonderful out there![]()

I'm going to be better prepared this year. I'll stock up on bedding. I couldn't find pine flakes anywhere last year,so had to get hay from a neighbor. I may need to buy a heated waterer too. Last year I put an outdoor heating pad under the waterer. It sort of worked. I'll also put some tarps up to keep snow out of the runs. I was very skeptical of getting snow last winter. It was shocking when we actually had ground cover for several days.My flock is molting now too but this is pretty much the normal time for them. I read an article the other day that the Almanac is calling for a colder winter, guess we'll find out soon enough if that's right.
