Sorry she had to have surgery but it is nice to have time to look at your options rather than feeling like you have to jump at the first thing.

Given the price of gas, especially in Calif, time to think about a hybrid or plug-in hybrid. If your family has another "long range" vehicle look at all electric. DW has been driving a Nissan Leaf (215 mile range) the last 1.5 years. 70 miles 6 days a week, charge overnight. Don't give a rat's ... about the price of gas Nothing is as nice as smooth, quiet and instant power.

My Prius Prime has used less than 200 gallons of gas in 25,000 miles. Would be a lot less if it weren't for the 425 mile round trips to MA twice a year and the 1,200 mile round trips to New Brunswick, Canada (DD1 at university) plus the "meet halfway" trips so she doesn't have to drive the entire 600 straight through. She really doesn't like to drive and 600 miles is hard on her. Personally I couldn't do it anymore, getting old!

She's graduating this year so we only need to go at the end of April to move her out of her apartment then back mid May for graduation (whose stupid idea was it to not have graduation right after school gets out?????)

Gas prices are insane! $5-6 per gal of gas is ridiculous. $85 to fill up my moms car every 4 days where my little versa was usually $60 every week. An electric car sounds like a good investment in the long run but, initially expensive. Would be something to consider one day.

Congrats on your soon-to-be graduate graduation at a later date does sound weird. Usually it's at least within a week of school ending. How inconvenient though.
