Good, home sounds like the best place to be with all the snowy weather.

Not really. I think I've only had to get the tractor out 3 times. And the temp keeps going over freezing and melting the snow. There is something wrong with brown ground in mid February. And multiple "mud seasons". Just not right!!Have you had a lot of snow this year? It’s already blowing and drifting on the roads. It’s 34* so it’s sticking to the highway too.
I would love to see brown ground at this point. We are just starting to see a little black dirt in the fields. It’s been snowy for a long time. I don’t think anyone’s weather is normal anymore. Not really. I think I've only had to get the tractor out 3 times. And the temp keeps going over freezing and melting the snow. I spend a lot of time with our chickens. Admittedly I don't necessarily need to. I clean the coops and runs early morning, check for eggs twice a day, and the rest is just time spent observing and interacting with them. The biggest problem is not trusting anyone else to look after them if I take a trip. Truth is, I hate trips. I'd rather be in my own home in the evenings. I prefer people visit me, rather than me visiting them. And then it comes here!
Probably not that range but could easily be half that.
I understand the travel limit thing but other than twice yearly cleaning out the coop bedding, I really don't spend much time on them at all. Morning - open the barn, feed and water them, check for eggs. Afternoon - feed and water them, check for eggs. Evening, make sure they are all in the coop, check for eggs and close up the barn.
Daisy started that last summer, I don't know why. She's now 3.5 years old. I hoped she would forget about that when everyone started their moult and stopped laying for a few months. But some of them uncharacteristically started up again mid last month. She was good for about a week then went back to snacking.
I put her in her own personal space. Doesn't stop her from eating her own eggs but at least she can't get to those laid by others. I tried filling a shell with mustard and putting it in with her, she tossed it out of the nest box after trying it and continued to eat her own eggs. I put her back in with the flock in the fall, hopeful as stated above.
I posted a healthy White rock hen on the Front Porch forum,. Oddly no one is interested in a free egg eating layer.
Good morning BYC friends![]()
