The Northern Howl

Chapter 3 survival

The voices came closer, the sound of snow crunching got louder. Eclipse lay beneath the pine shivering with fear. The sun was beginning to rise and there was no way she could slink away with out being seen, even if she had the strength to walk. The footfall stopped. Then the human clicked its fingers, the horse hobbled forward. Eclipse jumped in her skin as the humans let out a shrill scream! The scream caused more humans to come running. One human, a wise man, came forward and declared the bite mark was caused by a wolf! The men began checking the area for the wolf. Eclipse watched as they began search, scouring under every bush and tree, she knew she need to get out of there. She tried her hardest to gather her legs beneath but burning pain shot through her chest. She collapsed in a heap panting, her eyes watering, trying hard to muffle her whines of agony. She faced the fact that she most likely would die, when the men found her hiding place. In fear, she closed her eyes and traveled back to the last spring she had had with her family...it was a beautiful meadow with lots of flowers. She was chasing her brothers and sisters in the soft gold glow of the morning sun. The mountains ahead appeared blue in the early dawn and a gentle breeze swept the grass into waves...then the tainted memories flooded her mind..... a gunshot and yelps, men laughing...she awoke with a growl, to a hand touching her head. She was no longer beneath the tree but in a dark cave on a bed of moss. She began growling at the human in fear, she had know idea where she was or she had gotten here.....
The young girls voice was soft and gentle. Eclipse felt a longing for companionship, and the warm touch of girl, almost eased her. She shook herself out of it what was she thinking. 'This was a human, humans are bad.' Her mind raced.

Chapter 4 home and alone

Eclipse growled weakly at the human, but the young girl just smiled. Eclipse didn't trust her, humans weren't supposed to be nice. The girl's hand came down on Eclipse's head again, she closed her eyes and laid her ears back. In fear of pain she tensed and growled, but there was no pain! She was conflicted, part of her wanted to strike out and bite the girl, but her heart held her back. Her body trembled as she tried to relax and allow herself to be petted. She was almost at ease, when the girl's voice made Eclipse jump..
"silly wolf, what were you thinking? Tieaia may be an old horse but she is smart. And you, you are just a little wolf. You must be very desperate for food. Hmm...wait here I'll bring you some dinner."
Eclipse cocked her head, wondering what the human had said. She watched the girl walk back to the village. She turned her attention to her wounds but found her shoulder had a thick pasty goop smeared on the gash. She also realized that she could breath deep with out coughing. Her mouth burned with thirst, and she looked at the wet snow. In a burst of strength she gathered her legs beneath her and stood she stood! She stumble toward the snow, leaning on the wall of the cave. She was almost there, just a few more feet.... suddenly her legs swept out from underneath her as she hit an ice patch, she crashed to the ground, trying hard to silence the yelp building in her throat, she let out a low slow whine. After she caught her breath she filled her mouth with the snow and enjoyed the refreshing cold. The girl came through the tree line carrying a several pieces of dried rabbit meat. Eclipse began drooling and whining for the food. The girl threw it in the snow, Eclipse dashed out and pounced upon the prey, tearing into it ravenously.
The girl waited for Eclipse to finish eating and said "Sweet girl you have been here for a week now and I can't hide you anymore."
Eclipse cocked her head, wondering what the girl had said. She took a step toward the girl, the girl frowned and screamed "Nooo!" and out of her pockets she began to hurl rocks at Eclipse. She growled and whined with confusion, jumping out of the way. Finally, feeling defeated, she turned tail and ran back to the valley. She was heartbroken to lose a friend, but happy to be going home. She enter the valley and just stopped and listened.... she felt how empty and alone it was. Sorrow consumed her and she howled her loneliness to the dawn.

In a far away territory, in the predawn hours, he awoke to the sound of his pack making a kill.....

Chapter 5: Cast Out
400

In the predawn hours Aki woke, he pricked his ears to the sound of howls, the pack was celebrating a kill. He stretched and yawned, shaking the snow from his fur. He shivered as a cold morning wind ruffled his coat. Looking around he saw his brother, Thato.
"Come on Aki." Thato barked "breakfast."
Food had been scarce during the harsh winter, and the pack was lean and thankful for a good meal.
Aki and Thato trotted over the hill, looking down on the pack, feasting.
Thato ran ahead, joyously. Suddenly a large wolf jumped in front of him, snarling and snapping his mighty fangs, just inches from Thato's face.
Aki looked on in horror as his father, Blackheart, attacked Thato. He rushed forward, staying in a submissive posture. "Dad?" Aki whined.
"Blackheart!" Came a shrill bark. It was Silverwind, Blackheart's mate and the brothers' mother. "Stop!" She pleaded, trying to get between her mate and Thato.
Blackheart, in a rage, snapped at Silverwind, slashing her muzzle. She yelped and stumbled backwards.
Thato enraged by the attack on his mother, charged Blackheart.
"Die!" Blackheart snarled, he grabbed Thato's neck, and broke it.
Aki watched, in the blink of an eye, as his brother fell to the ground in a lifeless heap. He whined and stared at his father.
Silverwind nudged her lifeless son, whimpering, a sad mournful howl rose from her mouth.
Aki wasn't paying attention, when his father turned his fury upon him. Aki was sent head over heels down the hill, a jagged gash on his chest oozed blood. He yelped and fought to get to his feet.
   "Why?" Aki asked
"I will not be betrayed!" Blackheart roared!.................
Years ago, Aki's older brother, deadwind, had challenged his father for the alpha role. Blackheart had killed his son, but not before being seriously injured both physically and mentally. His pride had taken a devastating blow and now he was paranoid about all his sons.............
Aki refused to fight his father, nor run away, he paid dearly. His body was beaten, bruised and bloodied. And it was only after the pitiful pleas of his mother, that Aki finally ran.
He ran for miles, his mind reeling from the trauma of watching his brother die and his father's heartless attack. He whimpered as he raced along, every step a sending another massive shot of pain through his body. Black spots clouded his vision and he stumbled as he fought to stay conscious. World tipped and turned and he staggered, blindly looking for a place to sleep. He could just make out a small tree and limped his way to it. He collapsed, his blood matting his coat and freezing, the harsh wind biting down to his skin, he shivered and curled up, in a vain attempt to stay warm.

Eclipse trotted into the valley, sniffing the cold crisp air. Her nose caught a scent, "blood." She thought....
