Chapter 6: a new beginning
Eclipse sniffed the air, the blood carried the scent of another wolf. She feared it would be another attacker, like snowflower had been, but her need for a friend overrode all her fears. She limped towards the scent, the deep snow slowing her down. She came to a halt on a small hill, over looking a clearing. There she saw a wolf laying beneath a small pine. She cocked her head, pricking her ears.
Aki was curled into a tight ball, every muscle ached from shivering. His bleary sight noticed a wolf standing on the hill. He whined, wondering if he was hallucinating. Slowly he lifted his head and attempted to howl, but it was choked off by a fit of coughs.
Eclipse could stay put no longer, she descended the hill, and trudged through the snow, towards the wolf. Her body
low, a growl emanating from her mouth. She stopped a couple feet away. "Who are you?" She asked.
Aki looked at the she-wolf, he couldn't believe that any wolf would live in such a harsh territory. "I'm Aki." His voice a raspy whine. He trembled as the wind picked up again.
Eclipse cocked her head, looking at the Aki's wounded body. She let her guard down, taking pity on the half dead wolf. "Come on." She whispered.
She leaned into him, helping him to his feet "There is cave just over there." She swung her head to indicate the direction.
"I don't think I can." Aki mumbled, but still gave it his all.
"If you don't want to die of the cold," Eclipse said sternly "you'll make it."
Together, step by step, they closed in on the cave. Aki's body shook with the effort of just standing. And constant whine escaped his mouth with each step.
Eclipse's heart broke for the Aki, she could smell a whole pack on him, and she worried about what might have happened to him. She shook her to keep memories from flooding back.
"There." She said, staring ahead at a small cave nestled between some boulders.
Aki looked, relieved not to have to walk any further. They entered the small den and he collapsed, panting. Eclipse turned away, and headed back out, "I'm gonna go find food." She said, and padded into the forest.
Aki's body relaxed, no longer having to brace himself against the wind. He slowly and carefully licked his wounds. He looked out into the forest, blanked in white and looking utterly empty, "how can she survive here?" He thought.
Eclipse wondered the forest, winding between towering pines and sparse bushes. She tested the air for a trace of prey, sniffing the ground every couple feet. As she picked her head back up, she caught sight of hare. It was digging into the snow.
"Its hole must have been covered by the recent snowfall." She thought.
She crouched down, stalking closer, the only sound, the quite rustle of the wind. She struck out, crashing through a bush and skidding around a tree, the rabbit darted blindly looking for a place to hide, it dove into a thorny thicket. Eclipse's hunger surged her on and she charged into the thorns, grabbing the rabbit. Pleased with her catch she trotted back to Aki.
In the den, Aki could just make out a black figure emerging from the woods.
"She did it." He whispered, noticing the white animal in her jaws.
"Here you go." Eclipse smiled as she placed the rabbit in front of him.
Aki ripped off a piece and nudged the rest back to her "you should eat it too." He insisted.
Eclipse smiled and laid down to eat.
"I......Um....thank you." Aki whispered
"You are welcome." Eclipse said happily, then her tone turned sad "may I ask what happened?" She looked at his wounds.
"My father." Aki said, not wanting to relive it, he changed the subject.
"What happened to you?" He motioned to the gash on her shoulder.
"A horse." Eclipse sighed.
"I don't know your name either." Aki half smiled.
"O.... its Eclipse." She grinned.
"What a beautiful name." He said 'for such a beautiful wolf' he thought
