Chapter 6: a new beginning

Eclipse sniffed the air, the blood carried the scent of another wolf. She feared it would be another attacker, like snowflower had been, but her need for a friend overrode all her fears. She limped towards the scent, the deep snow slowing her down. She came to a halt on a small hill, over looking a clearing. There she saw a wolf laying beneath a small pine. She cocked her head, pricking her ears.
Aki was curled into a tight ball, every muscle ached from shivering. His bleary sight noticed a wolf standing on the hill. He whined, wondering if he was hallucinating. Slowly he lifted his head and attempted to howl, but it was choked off by a fit of coughs.
Eclipse could stay put no longer, she descended the hill, and trudged through the snow, towards the wolf. Her body
low, a growl emanating from her mouth. She stopped a couple feet away. "Who are you?" She asked.
Aki looked at the she-wolf, he couldn't believe that any wolf would live in such a harsh territory. "I'm Aki." His voice a raspy whine. He trembled as the wind picked up again.
Eclipse cocked her head, looking at the Aki's wounded body. She let her guard down, taking pity on the half dead wolf. "Come on." She whispered.
She leaned into him, helping him to his feet "There is cave just over there." She swung her head to indicate the direction.
"I don't think I can." Aki mumbled, but still gave it his all.
"If you don't want to die of the cold," Eclipse said sternly "you'll make it."
Together, step by step, they closed in on the cave. Aki's body shook with the effort of just standing. And constant whine escaped his mouth with each step.
Eclipse's heart broke for the Aki, she could smell a whole pack on him, and she worried about what might have happened to him. She shook her to keep memories from flooding back.
"There." She said, staring ahead at a small cave nestled between some boulders.
Aki looked, relieved not to have to walk any further. They entered the small den and he collapsed, panting. Eclipse turned away, and headed back out, "I'm gonna go find food." She said, and padded into the forest.
Aki's body relaxed, no longer having to brace himself against the wind. He slowly and carefully licked his wounds. He looked out into the forest, blanked in white and looking utterly empty, "how can she survive here?" He thought.
Eclipse wondered the forest, winding between towering pines and sparse bushes. She tested the air for a trace of prey, sniffing the ground every couple feet. As she picked her head back up, she caught sight of hare. It was digging into the snow.
"Its hole must have been covered by the recent snowfall." She thought.
She crouched down, stalking closer, the only sound, the quite rustle of the wind. She struck out, crashing through a bush and skidding around a tree, the rabbit darted blindly looking for a place to hide, it dove into a thorny thicket. Eclipse's hunger surged her on and she charged into the thorns, grabbing the rabbit. Pleased with her catch she trotted back to Aki.
In the den, Aki could just make out a black figure emerging from the woods.
"She did it." He whispered, noticing the white animal in her jaws.
"Here you go." Eclipse smiled as she placed the rabbit in front of him.
Aki ripped off a piece and nudged the rest back to her "you should eat it too." He insisted.
Eclipse smiled and laid down to eat.
  "I......Um....thank you." Aki whispered
"You are welcome." Eclipse said happily, then her tone turned sad "may I ask what happened?" She looked at his wounds.
"My father." Aki said, not wanting to relive it, he changed the subject.
"What happened to you?" He motioned to the gash on her shoulder.
   "A horse." Eclipse sighed.
"I don't know your name either." Aki half smiled.
    "O.... its Eclipse." She grinned.
"What a beautiful name." He said 'for such a beautiful wolf' he thought

Chapter 7: the bonds of love
Aki's wounds were healing nicely, he could walk, but was still in no condition to hunt. So, every night, he watched with a longing as Eclipse went and hunted for the two of them.
Today would be an eventful day, as the sun crested above the mountains, Eclipse woke and stretched, she nudged Aki.
"Wake up sleepy pup!" She said softly.
Aki aroused, yawning and shaking his coat out. He smiled as he shakily got on his feet. Eclipse's brow furrowed, wondering if he could make the journey today.
"Are you sure you're okay?" Her tone let on to how worried she was.
"I'm fine." He assured and started making his way from the small cave.
Eclipse followed, she stayed close, offering her strength for support. They slowly trekked through the barren forest. Eclipse led him towards the river, where they could follow an easier path. They stopped often to rest.
Beneath the shade of a towering fir tree, Aki panted. The long walk, through deep snow, was hard, and his body ached. He stared at Eclipse, she was such a beautiful wolf, and so kind. He was infatuated with her, but feared she would not want such a weak wolf for a mate. He shook his head and started to stand.
"Okay lets go." Aki said
Eclipse laughed a little, "okay." She grinned, her eyes staring into his, she looked away shyly.
She lead him to the brow of a hill, overlooking the white rapids of river, she nodded her towards an old game trail that meandered along the bank. "On the other side of the river, about a mile down, is my den." She said.
Aki looked at her in shock, he knew they were moving away from the valley entrance to stay safe, but he didn't know she was taking him to her den. "Okay." He whispered.
Eclipse ears flattened, she thought, by his tone, that he didn't want to go there, like he didn't want to stay. "We....we could go somewhere else?" She asked more than said.
"No," aki shook his head "its fine!" He smiled.
The pair padded down the hill, to the river, and began the mile long walk to the river crossing. Aki gazed at the fast flowing water, "we don't have water like this where I came from." He watched the water smashing into the rocks "we had a large smooth lake."
"This river is always like this," eclipse motioned up river, "it becomes calm farther up."
"O." Aki said lamely. "So why do you live here?" He looked around.
Eclipse stopped in her tracks. "My....my pack was killed and I ran away." She whined, and picked up her pace.
Aki mentally bit himself for being insensitive. "I'm sorry." He whispered.
"No worried." She whispered.
They continued along the game trail until they reached the calm part of the river, several stones separated them from the other bank. Helping each other, they crossed from rock to rock. Aki had to go slow as the rocks were slick with ice. A loud splash made Eclipse spin, Aki had slipped from a boulder and crashed into the river.
"Aki!" Eclipse yelped and plunged into the icy water to get him. Thankfully the water wasn't to deep and she was able to pull him onto a rock. "Aki?" She nudged him and licked his face.
Aki coughed, spitting out water, he groaned and looked up at her.
"O Aki." She sighed and nuzzled him. She stopped and stood up shyly, looking away. "Sorry." She mumbled.
Aki's heart leapt into his throat at her touch, and he wished she hadn't moved away. He dragged himself to his feet and shook the water from his fur. "Ecl....." he was interrupted.
"This way!" She barked and leapt to the bank.
Aki sighed and followed, carefully making his way to the bank, he was relieved when he stood on solid earth again. He followed her through a small patch of heavily boughed trees and thick tangled boxwood shrubs. After an arduous journey, they finally stepped into a small clearing. In the back of the clearing was a fallen tree, it leaned against a large rock and dug beneath it was a large den.
The sun was beginning to set and the snow turned orange and red in the glow of the evening. Eclipse leaned against Aki and inhaled his scent, she had been alone sooo long and having Aki around was such an amazing feeling, she just couldn't describe.
Aki looked down at the smaller black wolf, and rested his head on hers, he nuzzled his nose into the fur on her neck and sighed, he was finally contented.
"I love you." He whispered and licked her.
Eclipse pulled away and stared into his dark brown eyes "I love you too." Her voice burned with passion.
As the moon rose, Aki and Eclipse, slipped into the den to sleep.
