Hi, all! A week later and my girls are still healthy and growing. But they are doing something I think is unusual. Every morning, they wait for me to carry them outside to their little temporary pen. Once they are all together, they practice flying and stretching their wings but occasionally they fly AT one another, and then dance and feint until someone backs off. Is this where the term "pecking order" comes from? Are they establishing dominance? No one bird seems to be the head chick in charge -- They're only about 5 weeks old now. I can deal with horses and understand herd logic, so I want to equate this to that but I'm not sure when I should begin to worry about the lowest bird on the rung. They fight like children over scraps and goodies although I put out or hand feed enough for all four.
I'm also adding a photo of the same bird that was in my introductory post. You can now really see the white. In thinking back, the label on the brooder said "Black Buff Orpingtons" and I thought the store simply made a mistake. But is it possible that these are a cross?
