The Not So Secret Society of Chicken Keepers

Hey all! Just wanted to share some pics of my flock. In this post I'll be featuring my light brahma, Feather Foot! (Don't judge the name, I named her when I was 6 lol)

Feather Foot is a seven year old light brahma who was raised from a chick along with a dozen other hens in 2019. Feather Foot is very photogenic - she loves striking a pose for the camera, especially on my YouTube livestreams. Feather Foot had a best friend/twin named Fiona, who passed away this summer of sour crop (RIP). They used to rule the roost together, keeping the flock running smoothly. Every since Fiona passed away, the flock has been a bit messier and everyone fights over roost spots, but Feather Foot still tries her best to uphold Fiona's memory and be the prettiest hen in the flock (she is in close competition with Ellie and Hermione).

(Is there a reason people have been putting the pictures in spoilers?Just wondering.)

Thanks!

Oh, she’s so floofy!! I used to have a Brahma, and she had just as much butt fluff as yours :D

Now we'll talk about Ellie! Ellie is a four year old cochin (I'm not sure which variety, you tell me) who was adopted in February 2024. She loves dirtbaths and grass, and not much else. She's a bit grumpy and screams when I try to pick her up (I'm making it sound more dramatic than it is) and likes to complain about things with low grunting sounds. She's probably the winner of Prettiest Hen in the Flock, though Hermione and Feather Foot might disagree. I'm 99% certain Ellie is a hen, but.... I heard her crow once 😳. Ellie is best friends with Penny, a relatively solitary Wyandotte who I'll feature another time.

Aw thanks! Honestly I am VERY partial to roosters  Of course I have a few hens that have and do stand out to me, but my boys... they're just special 😌
Can you not have roosters or just choose not to?
No, I will not deliberately go out to get a rooster.

We are living in a suburb area, so rooster is not allowed.

My first rooster was in the very first flock of less than a week old chicks I adopted. This one was particular attached to me, it left the flock and came sat next to me so we bonded and then it crowed and we secretly kept him.
When I was at work, he was in child care with my mom, sometimes I took him to work and worked half day, and then worked haft day...etc...
He was with us for 7 years and he wore a rooster collar so that it reduced his crow. Each time we put it on him we told him why he had to wear it and it pained us to do that to him, but his life was good, he got to go places, his own flock, got a few hours to himself in the whole garden, ...etc.. I missed him dearly.

If I have a big property where I can have rooster, I will go to our gumtree here and adopt all the rooster that put up to give away for free. I feel pain whenever I see those adv, but there isn't anything I can do about it. I have thought of that, just 1 rooster as I miss my roosters dearly. I had a song for my old rooster and he often look so tender and head down toward me whenever I sing it. I miss him.

My neighbours were very kind because for the 7 years he was with us, not a complaint from them. 1 neighbour say to me that love chickens and they love to hear my rooster crow.

This is Little Nancy, named after Nancy. At this point we'd run out of names and anything sounded good lol.
