I wish I had a magic wand so that I could make the babies grow faster. I may have to get a few hens to relieve the tensions here.

The age at which roo's start crowing seems pretty variable. I have had Bantam Cochin roo's that waited until they were 20 weeks or so, and others that started much sooner. The youngest I can remember was still in the brooder - I want to say about 3 days old. It was the most ridiculous little giggly sounding squeak I have ever heard; it was only when I saw him stretch his head up in the way that roo's do that I realized what that sound was. I have a couple of Serama roosters that we joke about being "chicken ventriloquists" because they crow with their beaks shut; it makes them a lot quieter.

I plan on processing some, too, but right now I'm just starting my flock out, and the members of my original nine I intend on letting live out their lives here. They were the first and are my teachers, so to speak. They'll spend their retirement here. A question, though. Is it normal for a rooster to not only tolerate chicks but to actually lead them around and let them peck him and basically treat him like a chew toy? We let the babies ((2 months) out with the others today and they were following Prince Eric (BO) around like he was a mama hen. They were incubator chicks. They tried to get under him, followed him all around the yard and I even got a video of two of them pulling on his wattles. He just stood there and let them. He also dances around them in circles. I told him they are two young, but he just gazed at me placidly while they tried to get under his wings. My chickens are wierd.

Good Roosters do that. I just read a post about that. The Rooster was protecting the babies when they were integrated.
 
Aren't you lucky. It didn't get nearly as cold here as predicted. It's -6 now. Not going over zero today. -10 tonight. Wouldn't be that bad but the 25 mph winds are the pits.
Oh by the way, we had almost a foot of snow yesterday.

It's 20 degrees out there right now. With a breeze to boot. Not going out to the chicken coop until that wind stops at least. Don't see any chickens out there, must be inside. Brrrr...
