Cricket just crowed! OMG...it was the cutest thing. I guess he's older than we all thought he was. Now I have three roosters crowing, well - one who sounds like a squeaky toy - and only 5 hens. I wish I had a magic wand so that I could make the babies grow faster. I may have to get a few hens to relieve the tensions here.![]()

The age at which roo's start crowing seems pretty variable. I have had Bantam Cochin roo's that waited until they were 20 weeks or so, and others that started much sooner. The youngest I can remember was still in the brooder - I want to say about 3 days old. It was the most ridiculous little giggly sounding squeak I have ever heard; it was only when I saw him stretch his head up in the way that roo's do that I realized what that sound was. I have a couple of Serama roosters that we joke about being "chicken ventriloquists" because they crow with their beaks shut; it makes them a lot quieter.
