The Old Folks Home

re: Rats
They're smart critters. I found wearing gloves when setting/moving/baiting traps keeps the human scent off of them and makes them less wary.

We had had a horrible vole problem here earlier. Then, like manna from heaven, the snakes arrived. We've got at least three out in the veggie compound area. How do I know that? Because they managed to find the one section of bird netting that was low to the ground and I had to cut them out of it. (Nobody was happy about it, but we all survived.) They'll get the mice, too. But the voles have been doing a number on my plantings. Happy to report that my tomatoes and radishes had a trauma-free week. Thank you, Snakes!

Speaking of critter invasion...

New Mexico is on some sort of jet stream that brings the hummingbirds north. Also moving north has been such a thick migration of moths that they've shown up on doppler radar. I couldn't even get out of my house this morning as there were clouds of them. It was like "The Birds" but with insects. Thick on the doors, walls, flower pots, any shady surface. We need a big influx of bats!

It's supposed to rain on and off tomorrow and be cooler.
It is weird here for May. There was a flash flood warning for most of the North State but we only had a trace of rain. There may have been some thunderstorm cells in other places with localized rain. Maybe in the Sierras

My sister passed away on Friday. Glad she's happy now. That was tough for her. I had heard and read that this would be an easy one. Hard on us now.
I am sorry to hear this! It is always sad to lose a Family Member

Do that many moths come through every year?

It happens yearly, but this year is especially thick. I think a lack of moisture in the desert has them heading to more urban climes. The good news is the lack of moisture also means less mosquitoes.
It is good news on the mosquitos! We have west nile here so that is a worry each spring and summer
