Here there is enough grit in the dirt for them. I have not given the chickens any grit in a long timeWhat do you do when you run out of grit and you cant get to the farm store for several days? What have you substituted besides egg shells? Everything is covered with snow so there is no chance to dig for any soil The local pet store and walmart don't carry chicken supplies? They do have aquarium rocks (all sizes) that are sharp, not talking about pebbles. Not talking about the volcano rocks. It says they may have some minerals (no sodium) that could leach out. It says no added chemicals, you can naturalize plants in them and they are safe for the fish. I got a small bag of them. My next option would have been home depot for sand. Between the snow and having to be at the stand for Christmas orders my schedule is messed up and I can't go the the farm store because it's in the opposite direction from where I travel

I don’t think a few days without grit is going to hurt them because I’m pretty sure it takes a while to break down in the crop and they usually just eat it as they need it anyway so I think they will be fine and I wouldn’t worry about it. Mine rarely eat it but they do also free range somewhat often so maybe they are finding some while out, not sure. That said though, do you mean grit or oyster shell? Cause they are both quite different. Oyster shell is for calcium, grit would be to break down the food. I am sure you know that but I noticed you mention substituting for egg shells so wasn’t sure. They are two different things and can’t be substituted for each other. I know you said you weren’t doing that but just wanted to clarify. Either way though, grit or oyster shell, I think they will be fine for a few days. I’ve run out before and it’s not a big deal. Mine don’t usually eat much of it anyway. What do you do when you run out of grit and you cant get to the farm store for several days? What have you substituted besides egg shells? Too funny!Even when it snows and they don't have access to dirt?
We had snow here back in 1998...It was gone that afternoon!Good morning OF. I agree that a couple of days without grit will cause no problems as they retain it in their gizzards. I don't think Ron sees too much snow.
