The Old Folks Home

@microchick and all those following the adventures of a house rooster.. Today he actually got to go out and into his pen... along with Mara the black copper marans.. He took one look at her, did his little dance and hopped right up. My fears that he couldn't balance with just one wing were over rated. Prince is now a full grown.... well... um.. let's say he's broke in now, along with Mara. I'm gonna miss that little guy.

I was debating on what to do with those two EE pullets since they were constantly picking on the Beilefelder pullet I put in there with her guy. Graystoke took kindly to those two extra ladies but after 3 days it was the same.. They wouldn't give Lady a break.. soooooooo, I put them in the BIG run with Maggie, Millie and Sweetpea (older by lots). Bruce was so excited to see some more ladies, he hung around them all afternoon, while the other three just chillaxed in the sun. Then I moved Margaret, one of Bruiser's daughters in with the Beilefelder pair and of course Graystoke saw fresh....... but within an hour they were all bestest of buds, so that solved that problem too.

Tomorrow I get to take the tarp off of one of my smaller pens, pull 4 panels out, join the remaining panels in the center then extend the pen another 30" with one part 5 x 5 covered, and the other part 5 x7 uncovered except for deer netting.. House/deck kinda.

One of my neighbor ladies stopped by for more eggs tonight.. Her husband is on a keto diet and I guess eggs are in. But she's also going to help me out by telling her friends (I guess there are a lot of them too cause she's always on the phone) that I'm selling eggs. Guess it all works out in the end.

I NEVER understand the houses in snow country that are designed so the snow from the roof dumps on the front door.
Yeah, really!

Oh, man the things I would do differently if I were designing my own house...!

A friend who cooks a LOT moved into a house that had black textured Formica counter tops. She told me she wanted to ask the person who put that in, "Just how drunk were you when you decided that was a good idea?"

The people who had our house before us put in off-white carpet before they moved. In a house in the country with a wood stove and a dog. I hated it. Could not keep it clean. Kind of like the black textured Formica counter top stuff.

We have black granite countertops, it's like a black pit in the kitchen. Idk who put it in, but I am not a fan.

Yes.

This house when we moved in... had off white carpet, yes a wood and coat burning stove... AND. that off white carpet was also under the DINING TABLE! :th

After living with is for... 17 years??? Well... after 17-ish years it was a relatively even shade of brown...

:sick

Finally replaced it 2 years back with full plastic pretend wood. Best thing ever.

Yay! @CSolis! Prince rules! He is no longer Prince but King of all he perceives. Yes, I have really enjoyed that little cockerel's journey and although you miss him, he's out living the life he is intended to live.

Hope you keep us updated on his progress with more pics.

We have a Walker Coon Hound/Border Collie mix named Buck who loves to help me guard the chickens. Of course his idea of guard based on his Border Collie genes are forever in conflict with his WCH which means he will guard that hen house and run and the chickens are safe as long as they stay in the run and in the coop. I have him trained to the point where he will lay just quivering like a leaf if one of them gets out like his inner WCH is arguing with his BC half...gotta guard....gotta kill....gotta guard, mom says no no don't hurt the chickie birds but I need to kill one or chase it up a tree....but mom says no no no....so much conflict. The closest he came was carefully reaching out and taking one by the hackle feathers with his front teeth and try to pull it towards him. Lucking I was close by and gave him the No No, Chickie Bird speech and he let it go.

So today he's out with me as usual, lying in front of the coop door in the snow that is left there and when I leave the coop he's staring up at the roof. Like, what is he staring at? I go out and look up and yep, there's a bantam rooster up there. Like, okay, I let the bachelors out but how did one get up there? The little guy flew onto the net and I was able to catch him and get him back where he belonged but man, if the shenanigan's are starting already it's going to be a long summer.

As for houses. Our home was Amish built. When he got done screwing our place up and sold it to us, he built a house next door and screwed it up. NO! Do not believe what you hear when people tell you about Amish craftmanship. Sure, they can build cabinets and furniture so beautiful it will make you weep but I won't swear to more than that. When our neighbors moved in after about 6 months we went over to their house and I asked them if Ervin had built their house any better than he did ours and when they got done laughing and shaking their heads they gave us a tour. They basically rebuilt the interior of the house, put a foundation under it and a walk in basement. They did an amazing job. We have been working on ours for 10 years and still have more work to do on it. I bet I have said "WHAT WAS HE THINKING!?" so many times that I lost count.

So nothing surprises me any more. And YES, the only way to get a house the way you want it, is to build it yourself.
