The Old Folks Home

Seven dust is one of those magic panaceas that works on just about every animal without harm. We've used it on our dogs if they get a break out of ticks or fleas between monthly treatments. They hate it but it works. Always amusing to see them running from us with a cloud of dust following them.

Bag Balm! Another magic elixir. I used it on my mother when she was bed bound to keep her from getting skin break downs. My cousin passed the tip on to me after they used it for the same reason on their own mom, my aunt when she was dying. It really works.

Well the sun came out here today at 4 pm and it was like spring returned, birds are singing, temps are mild. There are still puddles in the yard but at least the chooks are enjoying the abundance of worms in their run...which reminds me I need to worm their little feathered butts next month. Last year my Fayoumis got an overload of worms from eating well...worms.

I have heard so many BAD things about sun roofs. I will never have one in a car. Total deal breaker for me.
Me either, don't care to have the sun beating down on my head and don't need the loss of headroom.

good morning old folks! supposed to get to 70 today!! can winter really be over?
Nope! Not up this way, it is just a hint that spring WILL get here. We will be down near or below freezing the next few nights.

Most of the time, I have to go out on the porch to get cell phone reception. One of these days I need to get a landline.
Go out to get cell reception? Hah! We are lucky when texts go through ... if we stand in the right part of the house. Forget making or taking a call. We have a landline and DSL internet.

I used to consistently text the wife that I was on my way home from work or a friends and she'd get it an hour after I got home. I know a few other people that had similar or worse reception problems put a self assembly, not DIY tower up in their yard and every one within a mile got good reception. It cost though.
What happened to the old phones that not only worked had little magnetic external antenna's that you could put on your car or out the window of a mobile home. New phones and services still don't always work but you can't spend the $10 bucks to make it greater. No you can spend hundred and hundreds on an upgrade or a grand on a phone just so it works. I wonder why I have a flip phone and am sending this message via computer.

Years ago, there was a time when there was a reciprocity agreement between the cell carriers in regards to roaming. That meant no roaming charges. Traveling, the phone would change to whatever carrier had the best signal.

When we'd go visit my parents in KY, at the front end of the house the carrier was T-mobile. Walk part way down the hallway, towards the back of the house, and it would change to Verizon.

Funny thing was, it didn't drop calls. It changed carriers seamlessly.

At least they're working on it, and it should be up soon. I feel your pain. I'm pretty rural, so there is only one internet provider, and internet is always cutting in and out. Most of the time, I have to go out on the porch to get cell phone reception. One of these days I need to get a landline.
We don't have landlines available out here.

I saw a bluebird today and was pulling weeds in the garden.

We don't either, Cap. But here's the cincher. We have a service box out near the front of our house. When our cell reception became so sporadic, we called Mark Twain Telephone who owns the box and asked them about hooking up a land line. Their response? Oh no, that box is there but we don't have service in that area!

Say what!

Yesterday I needed to phone in refills to the pharmacist. Dropped the call in the house. Moved out to our back porch which is covered with an overhang and stood near the house and tried again. Nope, kept cutting out. Moved to the north east corner of the porch and leaned out so my head was sticking out in the open. There's the ticket. Perfect reception.

Need I add that it was pour rain at the moment and windy?

My doctor is doing telephone appointments. They don't even question me any more when I tell them that I need to watch the weather before I set up an appointment because I will probably have to be standing in front of the barn or out in the pasture in order to get a half way decent signal so I can talk to them.

Why is it we can put people in a space station, send an unmanned exploration mission to Mars but we can't get a stinking cell phone service that works!?

That is the main reason that DH and I became HAM radio operators.
