Cynthia, Powder Springs is pretty much in West Atlanta. There was Ice and snow all of the way into Macon. They may have faired better North of Atlanta because they didn't get as much freezing rain and sleet. Baldwin County around Milledgeville Was still without power yesterday evening. Just south of Macon I didn't see any ice and there was a good dusting of snow on my truck yesterday morning. I drove to work at 7:30 yesterday morning. It was the best drive that I have had to work in years. it usually takesfrom 15 minutes to an hour to get through the gate since 9/11.

Airelle, the problem I have with cats is that they always have to walk between my feet and them they yowl when you step on them. They are going to kill me one day.
Mine like to sit at the top of the stairs in the dark. I need to turn a light on to make sure they are not going to trip me.

I really noticed how much they are in the way when I sprained my ankle years ago.

They are irritatingly sweet though.

Our seasons are a little crazy.

As we are in the Northern Hemisphere, we should have July as the hottest part of the year but its actually March April and May. This is because June-Sept is the wet season.

We put in 50 tomato plants about 6 weeks ago - small local tomatoes that ere not the tastiest but we are guaranteed they will grow. We also planted 10 seedling tomatoes that were seeds meant for last year's US summer season. I have 10 varieties I am taking over that supposed to be designed for the tropics so we will have a litte trial of each.

We have egg plant, okra, buk choy in. Lima Beans, spinnach, silver beets, corn, melons and squash will be planted in two weeks.

I managed to get 2 trailer loads of saw dust to use as a mulch and also to start composting.

After a small but successful garden planted 4 months ago, my workers suddenly see the value of home grown with the ability to sell the excess. The sales from any excesss veggies will be "sharefarmed" I get 50% and they get 50%. Of course they tend to the gardens on the clock so its all gravy for them.

I am hoping that between quail bird sales, some eggs and veggies, I wont have to remit as much in salaries.

Pozee, I took a friend of mine to have the cataract surgery a few weeks ago. he lives alone. His went very well and he had no problems. Both DW and I have cataracts I think hers is worse than mine. She is near sighted. The doctor said he would correct the near sightedness. He said the the cataract surgery would change her life.

SCG I know how you must be suffering - we have pretty much the same weather but, on a smaller basis. Of course it's suburban here and houses close together. I can't throw snow any higher, I am just a very short person. I did notice the backyard snow is much lower but, I'd have to use a wheelbarrow to lug stuff there. Too lazy, rather just complain.

WE are supposed to have a warm up 40-50 next week (uh huh, I'll believe it when it happens)which will mean lots of meltage freezing again each night into a skating rink. Besides the two biggest snow falls we ever had came on the heels of an unseasonable warm-up. Duh!! Will just stay inside and hope for the best when the ice cream runs out. To be honest I have gone thru so many ice cream cartons I've gotten sick of it, and let some melt down the drain in the kitchen. What is wrong with me? What can I pig out on besides ice cream, I even got sick of Nutella and the like - too sweet.

Hope you have some LLBean parkas and snow pants to get you thru this? My son left his Rugged Ridge Parka here (Xmas gift from years ago)- he said it was too hot to wear in Washington(where he lives). If it gets really bad I just put on his parka. When he comes for the Xmas holiday - I have to wash and vacuum the thing really well. He checks for gray hairs. IF he knew I wore it - he'd have a fit and say my' cooties 'were on it. I keep reminding him where he was for "9mos." before he was born - that upsets him too.

Yeah, our wardrobe is sponsored by LLBean. I went out this morning in my fleece lined jeans, LLBean lined boots, LLBean crampons, LLBean down jacket, and ear muffs and a face mask from somewhere not LLBean. Gloves were courtesy of Sears. It really wasn't that cold, but when the wind gets going and throws your snowblowing back in your face, it's bad. It then melts down your face and freezes at the end of your eyebrows and lashes, and in your hair.

My wheelbarrow is currently stuck under a snowbank, so I won't be cleaning out the goats or ducks or chickens for quite some time. That was poor planning on my part.

I already feel like I need a nap. Tonight's work shift is going to suck.

That's the end of my complaining. For a few more hours, anyway.

You mention the seedling tomatoes. Tomatoes tend to self pollinate and seedling tomatoes usually are usually true to the parent especially if another variety is not planted too near.

This is what we have coming up. This has been the most warm Feb. we have had in years! It's usually the coldest month of the year. Sorry SCG..you all are getting dumped on this year.

My birds are pretty tame and most will let you pick them up. But I have wire for the front section of my run that I can open up to confine the birds to a small area to make it easier to catch them by hand. Also we can close off the coop to keep them out in the run. I pay 10.00 for the blood test and my permit no matter how many birds I have. The guy does have a bird net but he does not use it on my birds as they are so tame.
I am only buying NPIP birds, as long as I buy NPIP my agent just logs the number in for those birds. And I will quarantine the trio when I get them even though they are also NPIP.
I could bring in non NPIP if I wanted to and quarantine them and call my agent to get him to come out and test them, I did once and I regretted it! As one rooster was sick and I treated the whole bunch with antibiotics then sold them quick!

We have a quarantine pen on the other side of our property. But I will never again buy birds that are not NPIP.
We are going to be building all new pens for all the new birds we have coming in this spring. Each pen will have a small hutch and nest for eggs. I am still wondering if I should do hatching eggs for my other birds or just go get some birds? Idk yet. I can't even think of any more large fowl birds that I have not already ordered or bought, but I am sure I am missing a bunch.... lol
Wow, NPIP testing would be the only time I would like different birds than I have. There's no way I can catch one of my birds during the day in most of the pens. I can catch the roosters in one of the buildings. A stranger wouldn't get within 50 feet of one. Nets, leg hooks, nonsense. All my coops are built with access doors along the roosts so I can collect them at night but I don't have enough cages so I'm trying to figure something out for NPIP.
The only plan I have so far is to go in the night before test day and put long tethers on each of the birds legs so I can grab them as they come out.
I'm open for other ideas.

I understand with a NPIP flock not wanting to get non NPIP birds. But as far as quarantine and bringing disease in. An NPIP bird is just as likely to bring in disease as any other since NPIP only guarantees against pullorum and avian influenza.

You're getting me motivated despite the fact that everything outside is white.

I need to start some flats in the cellar today.
