The Old Folks Home

Major atmospheric river going through here today into tomorrow. We've had 4.11" of rain since early this morning and it's still pouring steadily. (The chickens are NOT best pleased - a few ventured out of the covered run to poke around but soon shook themselves and scurried back inside, complaining loudly.)

Weather Service is warning of likely flooding along the nearby Mad River in the usual places. Bet our creek is booming right now but I'm not going under the forest canopy in this rain & wind to look - the trees are rockin' and rollin' in the sporadic wind gusts. (We're way up out of any flood risk areas, thankfully.)

Concerned about our daughter and future SIL driving home to Eureka today from the Bay Area in all this; hope their path doesn't get blocked by rock slides/fallen trees, things were so saturated before this storm hit.

Definitely had enough of this atmospheric river! Almost 5" since late last night, still drizzling. Our local online news is full of roadway flooding photos warning people where NOT to drive, plus pictures of people kayaking through the streets of nextdoor town Arcata! The low-lying pastures closer to the coast have water up to the top wires of their fences; looks like everyone moved their livestock to higher ground in time.

Very glad our daughter called to say they're staying over another day in the Bay Area instead of driving up through all this in the dark, with long remote stretches of the 101 devoid of cell service (even in the best of times) and subject to rock slides & fallen trees. My Mom-brain would've been going nuts worrying about them! The storm's slowly moving southeast so tomorrow will be much drier.

Now instead I can relax with a cup of tea and hang out here till dinnertime!

Good morning OF. Dh built a nice fire outside last night. Middle daughter came over too. Of course, that required hot chocolate. They were all out there by the fire, with marshmallows roasting, drinking their hot chocolate. Usually, I like to go out, and join in the fun, but last night I simply didn't want to. I stayed inside, warm and cozy with the cat.
