Congrats on getting your Buckeye's. Love all the peeping.

I have four brooders full of chicks. So much fun!

Our state law is no coloring of chicks allowed; and minimum of 6 chicks at time of purchase. DOn't think I have ever bought just 6 !!

Jealousy here.
It's hitting 32 in a few nights, back to covering the garden and praying for the apricots that are currently blooming and apple buds swelling.

We're in the clear for now.
A tornado touched down about 8 miles south of me as the crow flies right in the middle of the metro area. A lot of trees came down, buckled the pavement and caused a gas leak making everyone in the area evacuate at 4 AM. I was watching the weather live when they were showing the rotation on Doppler. That rotation moved straight east right through downtown. So far, no injuries reported but some messed up houses and cars.

We're supposed to be getting 3 more bouts of severe weather this afternoon, this evening and in the wee hours of the morning. The lightning and thunder has been pretty consistent since about 2 am and it's almost 9.
X2
I imagine if I was currently raising non-indigenous stock in a tropical climate, like OZ, I'd do things much differently.
The same holds true for anthelmintic treatment. I imagine in Florida or Louisiana, I'd be using them more regularly.
However, I still believe in breeding for resistance. IMO that starts with only breeding vigorous birds.
Another entry in 'Chicken Diseases', the book CanuckBock cited where the author Fred P. Jeffrey, a professor of poultry science advocates the rigid culling of all snifflers, droopers, feather rufflers, poor eaters and pale-headed birds to be sure they don't reproduce their kind.
I feel the same way. I wouldn't feel that way if I was a chicken pet person or wasn't breeding a very rare bird, but I do - so I am.

once i get enough stock to breed and cull that way, i shall

do you sell your culls or slaughter them?

I usually slaughter them but I'm selling some this week.
I was waiting to sell till I had them looking and performing better.
It's so much easier to manage with only one breed.
You have a huge task.

I was just about to go outside but it's pouring rain. Round 4 overhead, round 5 will hit in about an hour and a half and more to follow. Will be high winds, heavy rain, hail and tornado chance. It's really warm out now and we're right at a cold front line. Scary.
And I have a thunder Pomeranian hiding under my feet now. We're up to about 5 inches of rain in the last several days.
At least 100 homes were damaged this morning, state of emergency declared. Only an EF 1. Good thing the trees aren't leafed out yet with the saturated ground and high wind, more trees would be coming down.

I've been getting weather alerts on the phone all day yesterday and today. Got one this morning about 10 minutes AFTER the worst of the weather went through.

i forgot to mention squash, cantaloupe, cucumbers, and watermelon. I may get a second crop of peas and butterbeans but that should be all until the fall.

I have 9 lf brahmas for now but am planning a wisher1000 trip in mid may.

Really!? Better let me know, I will stop hatching extra chicks soon, but I will hatch some just for you if you let me know when you want them.

Speaking of planting (your other post) I have been good, only bought a dozen tomato plants (Beefmaster, Better Boy, Sweet 1000, Early Girl) a few cukes, yellow crooked neck squash, and some watermelon starts. Then, I am starting seeds myself - Prairie Sunflower, Easter Egg Plant (just couldn't resist,) ornamental peppers, and cutting flowers.

I usually slaughter them but I'm selling some this week.

Now you know what it's like to be in Alabama in April! We get too used to it and don't take it as seriously as we should. Don't take any chances, find a basement to get in!

Wisher im sort of leaning towards getting some eggs from u and trying to incubate. It seems like the next logical step. I wont be able to make the trip until mid may though. Im about to start reading up more on incubation. Sunflowers i did not think of to grow but sounds good. Guess im gonna have to google easter egg plant
