The Old Folks Home

Dragonfly good luck with job hunting,I also have become recently unemployed so am taking some time to regroup and figure out what I want to do! Always figure when one door closes another will open!

Thank you! I'm sorry to hear that. Good luck to you as well! And I tell you, that's what I'm thinking! This job had no benefits, no holiday pay except Christmas and maybe thanksgiving, no health insurance, he stopped the 401k years ago, and he wasn't even paying into it, but it cost him something. But I think we will both find something better! I'm gonna enjoy a whole growing season for once and be able to spend a lot more time on my chickens. And I'm going to look into getting financial aid for going back to school.

Apropos to absolutely nothing, I've had this song playing in my head all day. Could certainly be worse!!

I love this song and the video.

Pozzes I'm using a red heat lamp.

The basics for young chicks are heat, food, water. Sounds like you have those covered. Next thing to try is distraction/entertainment - small roosts, makeshift mazes, mirrors, etc. I have to say I've never heard of chicks that young behaving so aggressively - is there a chance they are too warm?

Thank you guys for ask the well wishes and encouragement! You guys are the best! I am thinking hard about looking into getting a student loan while I'm on unemployment. I feel like a future employer wouldn't look down on that? Than you guys so much for the advice as well. I'm really looking forward to taking a little time off and getting my chickens and garden going! Here are the, much anticipated I'm sure ;-), photos of my three week old babies!

IMO, you won't be able to tell them you're going to school. On unemployment, they want you actively seeking employment all week and you must declare that you are available for work every day or at a minimum, you'll be docked for days you aren't available. You'll also have to occasionally submit a list of all the contacts you made (minimum of 3 a week) - the company, the contact person, their phone number and whether you made contact on line, in person or by phone. In person makes the UE people happier. If you don't submit the form in a timely manner, you get dropped from UE and you'll have to file an appeal which can take months.
Sorry to say, I'm an expert.

dragonfly check with your unemployment office before making any decisions. I don't know if it's a federal or state guideline, but when DH was laid off, he was told he would have to relinquish unemployment pay if he went to school or did any volunteer work, as either would indicate he was not available for work and therefore disqualify him.
In DFs situation, I'm sure you're right.
If it's an entire industry that has thousands on UE, sometimes there are grants that allow school and UE at the same time but those are rare circumstances.

Thanks Ronott1. They are not bleeding but very aggressive they won't give the other chicks a minutes peace. Constanly going for the feet dragging them and pulling at them. They are Rhode Island reds. I just raise some comets and I never seen them that aggressive.
RIRs are a bit more aggressive. 24 hours of light makes them a little crazier. A much better alternative is a ceramic heat emitter or other non light source of heat. 8 hours of sleep makes them calmer. Red lamps are recommended but that's more to prevent picking of wounds. A blue light has a calming effect on chickens.
If you switch to a non-light emitting heat source and a blue light, you may be out of the woods. A larger brooder space will help too.
I use these

and give a dark period after day 3.

Keep in mind, you don't want to take on too many projects. I have so much less time since retired. I thought, I can do that, I'm retired. All of a sudden I have a hundred more projects than I had before. I get less done on a day to day basis than when I worked 7 days a week.
