When I joined BYC I lived in Sin City, USA....Las Vegas. It's a double entendre. And my first avatar was a photo of Peeps in a Strip Club, since removed. Twisted, yeah, I know. But it was pretty funny.

Wow you all have been a very chatty bunch this weekend!

SCG yes, I do think we know all about not winning drawings for things we really want.

Bamadude, my avatar name is actually a version of my nickname. My nickname is DiDi and the first time I went to get an email address I wanted Dsquared but that was already taken so I took out a couple of vowels. I have used dsqard for many login names since.
I went on a hike to a mountain lake on Saturday. It was my second big goal to do once I quit smoking because I didn't make it there the first time I tried. I made it to the lake and I swear got a cosmic reward for my hard work on the way down.

Cynthia, you have probably heard of Lake Blanche in Big Cottonwood Canyon.

It was a gorgeous day to do the hike and a gorgeous trail to take.

That's very interesting and obviously proving true here. Our bee school teacher told us not to use a queen excluder because it's also called a "honey excluder" because it's more difficult to get to for the workers. However, I have burrholes in the front of each box and they seem to use that instead of the main hive entrance, so perhaps it will work. I don't have enough workers in the hive for a swarm, maybe soon though. It took a long time for that hive to regain strength after the long winter. I cleaned out piles and piles of bees this spring.
Do you use foundation?
I'm not sure we have goldenrod here, but I was warned about the smell (dirty gym socks) from the books I read. Hopefully I don't experience that.
I've never used a queen excluder.
I've seen some people use mediums for brood chambers but around here we usually use 2 deeps on each hive for brood. The queen rarely goes above the second deep. We think it's important to get a lot of brood built up through the summer and deeps are better for getting the cluster through the winter.
2 deeps will give the cluster a lot of honey above it to move up into as winter progresses.
I always use foundation. I have a mix of equipment. Wax foundation, plastic foundation and full plastic frames. I have mostly deeps and shallows but I have about 3 medium supers.

I have had pet rats for a number of years and my first one was named Lula (lularat) She was a very special little lady.
Do you know a good way to catch a pet rat that is running around my back porch? There are lots of hiding places but he comes out periodically day and night.
I want to catch it alive.

Beautiful pictures.
In my mind, I was pronouncing your screen name like discard.
