The Old Folks Home

I showed dogs for years, and there are some fabulous people and some awful people inhabiting that world. I have only attended a couple of poultry shows, and would really like to get to a large, good one, the local shows have been somewhat disappointing in both quantity and quality of entries. I'd love to be the one splitting a room with you, Wisher, but it isn't in this year's budget. I hope you will share many wonderful pictures and experiences with us, assuming you find someone to share the room, which you probably will as it draws closer.

I showed horses for years. It was the same. I had a good horse and usually placed high in classes, so there were people that only bestowed their friendship on me because I was better, and there were people who disliked me because I was better. I saw the ones in the first group be rude and look down on nice people because their horse was average. These same people, both groups, often placed higher than they should have because of their name or their barn name (money.) I got tired of it and I was "popular," I can imagine how disappointing it was to show under those conditions for the beginners. I quit showing for that reason.

I love the atmosphere at poultry shows. There are all kinds of people, all levels of experience, beginners to master breeders, long beard and overalls, to lab coats and color coordinated carriers. Bird that are so wonderous that they bring tears to your eyes, next to a first year breeder's best bird that leaves much to be desired. They are brought, not to compete, but to glean the wisdom and advice of the collective breeders. It really is a great atmosphere.

Pozees - if you truly want to go, we can go the cheapest route possible, lunches made and taken to the show, supper in the room from groceries bought or brought. It would be fun!

Quote: You could make an adventure out of it. Hitchhike all the way. I'm sure a person with a rooster s(h)itting on their shoulder would easily be picked up just out of curiosity. Then you just have to find some BYC member who lives close and is willing to let you put up a tent in their yard. You can also cook up some pretty amazing meals on a Trangia - I wish I had some pictures of the meals we used to make in the boyscouts as a kid.

The mother is supposed to be a Araucana, although in the olive egger thread they were guessing it might actually be a Cream Crested Legbar. It was sold as a Araucana x BCM egg though. 'Fancy' breeds are still a pretty new thing in Finland, so it's possible the breeder has been deceived too. I posted some pics of her brothers in the OE thread.
i have chickens that lay blue eggs that look li8ke that. they are ameraucana/polish

Quote: This is the reason that the peaches at the grocery store are always a bit green - they just don't ship well. If you want a really good peach, you gotta go where they grow.

I've never shown either dogs or horses, but I've heard the same things said for years - that sometimes, who is on the other end of the lead carries more weight than the animal itself. Showing rabbits is the opposite; in fact, the judge isn't even supposed to know who owns the rabbit he's judging (though often they do anyway). At the bigger cooped shows, they have runners whose job is to carry the rabbits to the judging tables, so the judge doesn't even see the rabbits in the owners' hands.

Pepe weight close to 9 pounds several months ago. I will weigh him again since he is almost a year old. He is very heavy.

Beautiful guy ron..wish I could have one of those. Is that color called..mottled? Just guessing here. He's just gorgeous.

Yes, the color is mottled. They look similar to Mottled Java chickens but the genetics are a bit different. There is a red mottled version and it looks like we can get them from our--we have to get a pair of white sports.

Ok, Karin asked the breeder about our Olive Eggers pedigree. A slight misunderstanding earlier on our behalf. Apparently the roo for the mix is a BCM x (BCM x Cuckoo Marans), and the hen is something along the lines of (Araucana x ?) x (Orpington OR some sort of Silkie x Finnish Landrace), and looks pretty much like Töyhtis does.
